Social media has brought great significance in the lives of people in terms of communication. Its advancements has transcended across all facets of society with its positive and negative impacts. Areas such as communication, learning, research and education in general are being continuously transformed and influenced by Social media. By a strict dictionary definition, Social Media is described as, “any forms of electronic communication (as Web sites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam-Webster, 2015). Students have more free time and leisure in using the social media than focusing on their studies. A study by Haq and Chad (2012) showed adverse influence of Social media on the academic performances of students. It was showed in their study that both female and male spent equal time on using the internet however female used social media such as Facebook more than males. Moreover, male has more friends than females because they engage more on sports and outdoor activities than females. Thus, the use of social media can affect academic performance negatively. Nevertheless, the degree of eagerness that nursing students have in using social media should still be studied in order to develop the appropriate methods of teaching. There is a direct relationship between social media and personality of students. Results from a study conducted by the Swedish University, the inclusive use of social media such as Facebook by the students who are extraverted results to a low school performance. The population of this study mainly consists of third year students from the College of Nursing of Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan. From a sample of 40 students who chose to participate in this research study, we have found out that 100 percent of those who completed the survey admitted to having a membership on one or more social networking websites, mostly using social media for academic purposes.
