In the article by Dalton Conley called “Social Control and Deviance “he talks about how in a pre-modern society people are held together by sameness and when you commit deviance you offend the collective conscience. But, I feel as I can relate to deviance because now that I am in college I often find myself becoming more and more informally deviant. I would never go to certain extents like in the text the example is picking your nose as a form of informal deviance. I would never do that because I find it to be inappropriate and repulsive. But I do break social norms because of society’s usual reactions. In the article it talks about normative compliance were people abide by society’s norms and unspoken rules. For the most part during my day to day life I try to follow them so I do not seem to be too weird. On occasions I find pleasure in breaking them. One case of this is going up to strangers and talking to them which is not necessarily deviant because it happens all the time. But the matter in which I do it seems to be deviant according to those around me. My close friend Megan who also attends the University of Maryland is often with me when I have these burst of deviance.
