Growing in the Philippines I was taught to care for others and respect our elders. When both my grandparents’ health deteriorated I have spent a lot of time looking after them and brought comfort to them. Within that period I have realized that I would love to help more people like that. Observing the nurse, who cared for my grandparents and how well she has treated them in a professional and caring manner, I knew that this profession is something I would like to be trained as an adult nurse. When I have moved to the UK I have completed a Health and Social Care course, which has not been easy for me, as English is not my first language, but because of the support in my commitment I achieved a DDD in my course.

I have completed work placements at various elderly day care centers/residential homes which has enabled me to gain a practical understanding of what we have learnt in the classroom; whilst at the same time getting to make a difference to the lives of those we helped. For instance, ensuring that a patient’s privacy and dignity is maintained, whilst dealing with their personal care and the importance of record keeping, accurate care plans and hand overs when working in multi-disciplinary teams. After completing my BTEC course, I have done a placement at Croydon University Hospital, this has been a valuable experience as it has enabled me to work in a functioning hospital and experience the work of nurses and care assistants on a daily basis as they care for patients.The placement has made me realize that nursing is suitable career for me because during emergency situations I stay calm and deal with
