Evolution of soccer balls Over the years soccer has suffered lots of changes but the thing that has changed the most are the soccer balls that had been used before soccer even existed as the Greeks used to play to carry and kick a ball, the medieval would do the same but they would not let the ball fall to the ground and the Chinese that used to carry a ball around a net stretched between two poles. The soccer ball did not even have a round shape as they used pigs’ bladders so the ball would be the same shape but with stitched up cloth or leather for better shape retention but the problem was that the more irregular the bladder the more unpredictable the behavior of the soccer ball would be when kicked. Now the soccer ball has evolved so much that these days the new soccer ball that it is going to be used for the World Cup (Brazuca) is not even stitched any more it is joined by thermal bonding which makes the ball waterproof and the weight will only increase by a 0.2% of its original weight. In this essay I’m going to talk about the evolution of the soccer ball and the new technology that is being implemented. In 1540 the first soccer ball ever made was owned or believed to be owned by Mary Queen of Scots and it’s even believed that King James ordered this ball. “It could be one of those balls which has actually lasted through the years and was given to Mary (Queen of Scots) as a young child, to play with.” said Michael McGinnes collections manager at the Smith Museum. The soccer ball is really light and it is even smaller than a regular ball. It is also believed that they played in a royal court and they even played with twenty players (10 on each side) and in some cases they will even played 20-a-side. In conclusion the last few years companies like ADIDAS has innovated and has changed the way to see and to play soccer because the soccer balls it is the most important thing when playing. From pigs bladders to synthetic foam and micro textures the technology being used has suffered many changes to fulfil the FIFA requirements but also to improve them like the Brazuca did. Even from ancient times they had the desire to play and to have fun with a beautiful sport like soccer so this is why companies have made a better experience from this sport and they develop better and better technology to make the game more interesting and more enjoyable to play.
