The book I chose to read was “Smile for the Camera” by Kelle James, Copyrighted in 2010. It starts off with chapter one. Kelle, the main character, is lying in bed when her dad walks in. he has a gun in his hand and hes crying, not a good combination according to her. Kelle pretends to be asleep. She decides she needs to leave home. That’s where chapter two begins. She climbs onto the enormous Greyhound bus with her suitcase in hand. She waves goodbye to her father but he only nods. Kelle’s father never really liked her. In fact he hated her. As the bus pulls away, her father waves to her. Kelle was on her way to New York City. Her room is small but she doesn’t need a lot of space. It’s a decent enough size for her to live in. She takes out a skillet and a can of spaghetti O’s and makes herself some food for she hasn’t eaten in a while. Kelle stands outside the Modeling agency’s door. She takes a deep breath, pushes the door open, and walks inside. A tall lady walks into the room and calls Kelle’s name. Kelle follows her into a small officewhere her height is measured. Kelle’s to short to be a runway model but she doesn’t want to be a runway model, she wants to be a model in pictures. However, the lady doesn’t care what Kelle wants and rushes her out of the room. Kelle walks around New York City barefoot. She finds herself in front of a large white building with multiple steps. She sees people sitting on the steps laughing and having fun. Kelle goes to sit on the steps. A guy asks Kelle if he can sit next to her. She says yes. He can tell something’s bothering Kelle so he asks her what’s wrong. She tells him the whole story of the modeling agency. He understands and gives her three addresses. They’re all for modeling agencies. She thanks him and he leaves. Kelle is forced to run back home to avoid these reporters. She calls Rayna straight away. Rayns tells Kelle that Buddy broke out of jail and that they think Kelle drove the getaway car. Her name was in all the papers. She had nothing to do with it. She hadn’t known that Buddy broke out until just then. She was in trouble. Every once in a while Buddy would call Kelle to see how she was doing. However, she was more concerned about him. He was fine where he was, nothing was wrong,, no one recognized him. Kelle hadn’t heard from him in a while. She was worried. Rayna came over and told her what happened. He got caught in a little restaurant in California. He was transferred to a prison on the border of Canada. He was never going to escape. Rayna has always been there for Kelle and always will be. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition triggered by a terrifying event and mostly effects military veterans. The book Lone Survivor, written by Marcus Luttrell, is an eye witness account of the 2005 operation Red Wing that tells the harrowing story of SEAL Team 10. Throughout the book, Marcus hears voices in his head of his fallen teammates. Even today, Marcus wakes up in the middle of the night because of the terrible nightmares, which are symptoms of PTSD. There are a lot of ways to combat PTSD so our troops do not have to endure this hardship. Some of the ways to combat the disorder is to understand PTSD, detect it early, having family support and preventing it.
The fourth Chapter of Estella Blackburn’s non fiction novel Broken lives “A Fathers Influence”, exposes readers to Eric Edgar Cooke and John Button’s time of adolescence. The chapter juxtaposes the two main characters too provide the reader with character analyses so later they may make judgment on the verdict. The chapter includes accounts of the crimes and punishments that Cooke contended with from 1948 to 1958. Cooke’s psychiatric assessment that he received during one of his first convictions and his life after conviction, marring Sally Lavin. It also exposes John Button’s crime of truancy, and his move from the UK to Australia.
1. Nick Paumgarten, the writer of “We Are a Camera”, brings a few flaws of the GoPro to light. A few of these flaws are in the tedious design, but one major risks of the GoPro are the intent of what it’s commonly used for and the people using the GoPro. In the design of the GoPro Paumgarten explains, “It has no display, so you can’t see what’s in the frame.” (332) This could be annoying because the user may need some experience with the GoPro camera lens to know how broad the vision is on the device.

My Forbidden Face by Latifa relates to this course in a number of ways. First, the fact that the author cannot divulge her real name for fear of being beaten, raped, and/or killed is one way that the book correlates with the class. In the poem “The One Girl at the Boys’ Party,” Sharon Olds uses imagery to convey pride in her daughter’s growing femininity. What would seem to be another childhood pool party for the girl turns into an event that marks a rite of passage to adulthood. Though the narrator is reluctant of her daughter’s search for an identity, she ultimately sees her daughter’s transformation to womanhood as admirable. Olds’ pride is first shown when the girl begins to lose her innocence from the unfamiliar surroundings of masculine men. The narrator says, “They will strip to their suits, her body hard and indivisible as a prime number” (5-6). The girl’s stiff and confident stature that this image conveys suggests that she is anxious yet willing to progress
Being chased in a nightmare is one of the most fearful nights anyone has ever encountered. Every time when you were about to get caught by something or someone, you fall into an utter darkness. When you open your eyes, you realized this is the reality. Perhaps, the dreams you've been having constantly each night were here to frighten you. At the end, you have the remains of these memories, and these remains are what are important. These little pieces of memories can be useful as they can help you to begin your journey in conquering your fears. Without them, how can you learn to have faith and perseverance? Having perseverance can help an individual go on their path to find happy dreams they wish to have. Hope can divert one's mind into putting a lot of effort and time into their passion of work they are willingly to sacrifice. Even a little of false hope can help. It also applies to in the real world where one has to fight their way out of the miseries of barriers that are laid in front of them. Encountering your fears are the worst moments in life, but you will grant a reward for succeeding them. Not all people are brave enough to struggle alone. This fight is only between you and your fears. Don't let anyone stop you from trying something they think you're no match for. Though using perseverance and having hope can be tricky, this lets you to face the fact that you can face fears in reality and overcome them. The beginning doesn't count but the end of your long voyage from experiences earned counts.
One of the events that Buddy and Skye’s love causes, is Buddy getting in trouble with his parents. At dinner one night, Buddy keeps tell his family about how wonderful Skye’s house is. His father gets annoyed and asks him to step outside for a talk. Once outside, Buddy’s dad starts to beat him. “What is was a punch to my neck, so hard I fell down from the weight of it.” Although he knows what will happen when he goes out with Skye, he still goes out.
In the poem “My red face hurts” by Duncan Mercredi, the author has conveyed his message through describing the tragic events that are faced by many discriminated races to exemplify that people cannot face human equality because it reveals the horror of the injustices they commit. Mercredi has portrayed his message because he wants to emphasize the racial hatred and inequality various different races are experiencing. To begin with, one of the main subjects that the author has expressed in his emotion-filled poem is racial discrimination, how people torture many races and treat them like animals only because of their color. Lucid dreams, or out of body experiences, are claimed to be real by some, even though scientists and doctors say that they are not real. Susan Blackmore explains in “Lucid Dreaming: Awake in Your Sleep?” that lucid dreams are considered different than normal dreams. Blackmore also goes on to say that a lucid dream requires concentration when someone falls asleep. In some cases people claim that they are able to control their dreams, or leave their body whole they dream. In Julio Cortazer’s story, “The Night Face Up,” the main character can arguably be said to have an out of body experience starting after he is involved in a horrible motorcycle accident. He dreams of traveling back into the past to a time where the Aztecs are attacking the Moteca tribe. There are two different scenarios when it comes to deciding what real life is for the man. Scenario one can be argued that the main character is living in present day, and dreaming of the past. Scenario two involves the main character is living in the past, and dreaming of modern day life. In using Blackmore’s article to explain the story, it makes the most sense when the main character is living in modern day, and dreaming of the past.
