Skiing Accomplishments 2015-2016 Season: Though my 2015-2016 season ended suddenly, I accomplished multiple things for the short amount of time I had. In the past season’s open races, I was on the podium 3 of the 5 open races I skied in and was top ten in the other two. Though I was unable to attend the Western Region U-16 Championship, I was able to qualify having only completed 6 of the 9 races due to injury. For the 6 races I placed consistently in the top ten with one top 5 and three results just outside of the top ten. Though it was frustrating to not be able to improve as I usually do throughout the season, my almost two months of racing this season were certainly beneficial and aided in my growth as an athlete. I am now officially in my Senior year of Cross Country , and am close to the end of my season. My first race of this year though was a big accomplishment for me, because I hadn`t been able to run. When I ran that race though it made me just so happy I was able to finish it, I was`nt happy with the time, but there is always time for improvement. I was glad to be racing again and being apart of the team again. I believe that my injuries were a barrier in my way, but they did not stop my sports career.
At 6pm on a Saturday evening, Sally and her parents were on their way to go skiing for their 20th time. The whole family was extremely excited and looking forward to this, especially since the place was somewhere they’d never been to before. As they were in the car, Sally was daydreaming about what the place would look like, and wondered if her worst fear would be there: ski lifts. Everything about this scared her. The car is out in the open, has no roof, and the ride could malfunction at any time. In 2014 I was determined to make the high school soccer team. Every day at 8 am at the beginning of a dreadfully hot August morning, I would get to the turf fields for 4 hours and participate in “hell week”. After a long week, I made the JV team. I was never put into the game and felt like my hard work was put to no use. My sophomore year rolled around and I tried extra hard to impress the coaches. Anything and everything was a competition to make it to the top. By the end of the week, we all gathered around the paper that had names of the players who made it. I didn’t make the team. Moments of Silence I got up this morning excited and slightly nervous. We were going to the Vail bowls and it would be my first time going backcountry skiing. Vail had some of the best skiing conditions in the world and the bowl would have who knows how many feet deep of ungroomed powder, and as much space as the eye could see. I was going with my father, someone who had been through army training and years of PT still and yet still had a tough time snowboarding. I guess it’s to be expected with the age though.
With its overpriced lodge food, expensive hotels, and increased commercialization, skiing is a notoriously elitist sport, a luxurious activity that can be enjoyed only by a wealthy few. However, the normalcy ideology of human ability, which draws a division between normal people and disabled people and therefore is integral in maintaining the social caste system in daily life, further restricts how many can interact with the sport. By examining the skiing community, one can understand how this ideology functions: there are normal skiers and disabled skiers, who range from poor skiers to people who cannot ski for a variety of reasons. Further complicating this caste system are the professional skiers, the ones who appear to have superhuman skiing abilities. Interactions between and perceptions of these distinct social classes are responsible for both overt and implicit
Although snowboarding hasn’t been in the Olympics for very long, it is still a very important sport. When the first snowboard was made in 1917, nobody thought that it would become such a popular sport. In fact up until the early 1990s most ski resorts banned boarders for fear of injuries. The Olympics had snowboard as a demonstration sport in the 1994 games, before it became a full sport in 1998. With multiple events and thousands of fans, all eyes will be on the boarders this Olympic games.
Lindsey Vonn is the oldest woman to win a Winter Olympic medal in Alpine skiing. She is the only woman from America to get gold in the downhill sport so far. Lindsey also competes in Alpine Skiing women's combined and The Super-G.
I was the first person to ski off of the chairlift that day; arriving at the summit of the Blackcomb Mountain, nestled in the heart of Whistler, Canada. It was the type of day when the clouds seemed to blanket the sky, leaving no clue that the sun, with its powerful light, even existed anymore. It was not snowing, but judging by the moist, musty, stale scent in the air, I realized it would be only a short time before the white flakes overtook the mountain. As I prepared myself to make the first run, I took a moment to appreciate my surroundings. Somehow things seemed much different up here. The wind, nonexistent at the bottom, began to gust. Its cold bite found my nose and froze my toes. Its quick and sudden swirling movement kicked loose snow into my face, forcing me to zip my jacket over my chin. It is strange how the gray clouds, which seemed so far above me at the bottom, really did not appear that high anymore. As I gazed out over the landscape, the city below seemed unrecognizable. Most seventeen year olds participate in a winter sport, myself included. Most started participating in their sport when they’re young, myself included. Most seventeen year old’s sport doesn’t take them to competitions in Main, Quebec, or Alaska, but mine did and still does. I race sled dogs. My parents met at a dog race in Chugiak, Alaska, a suburb of Anchorage. I’ve grown up playing with puppies, helping my parents to the start line, and racing my own team. I would go to my parent-teacher conference every year in elementary school and listen to my mom explain that we would be going to Alaska for two and a half months, and that I would need my work before we left. We experienced different reactions every year. For example, my second grade teacher exclaimed “So are you running the Iditarod? That’s so cool!” This reaction is common. Most people don’t know how the sport of dog racing works. Most people think a sled dog is a fluffy dog that logs hundreds of miles because their heartless owners forcing them to, but unfortunately this stereotype
To reach my goals, I’ve faced many challenges and have learned to be mentally tough. It’s one of the fastest and most physically demanding sports with extraordinary fitness and strength requirements. I learned to overcome pain, illness, injury, frustration and fatigue to put the game and the team before myself. I left home at an early age, living with host families, to pursue my goals and play high level hockey. Hamlet said, “We know what we are, but not what we may be”. Leaving home, I knew I could handle it but I never knew then that what challenged me would give me strength. I didn’t know then that living without my family, feeling alone at times and struggling to become self-reliant would help me become who I am
Skiing and snowboarding are two very different sports, that have evolved and morphed together to define an entire global industry and are now tantamount as salt and pepper. Skiing was popularized decades before the conception of snowboarding however, snowboarding was conceptualized in part, by skiing. Skiing became a mainstay when it was introduced to the Olympics, it quickly grew to dominate winter sports all over the world. The world was shocked when snowboarding made its way onto the Olympics roster and was perplexed by the influence it carried. The two sports were at war from the beginning, clashing in every possible way. As skiing and snowboarding grew and evolved, so did the winter sports industry. These sports spawned a new generation of athletes, with new trends and ideas, which have completely resuscitated the snow sports industry.
Thin air encompasses me as I commence the final day of skiing at Vail, Colorado. Seven days of skiing elapse rather painlessly; I fall occasionally but an evening in the Jacuzzi soothes my minor aches. Closing time approaches on the final day of our trip as I prepare myself for the final run of the vacation. Fresh off the ski lift, I coast toward the junction of trails on the unoccupied expert face of the mountain. After a moment of thought, I confidently select a narrow trail so steep that only the entrance can be seen from my viewpoint.

A majority of the census views skiing as the sport of heavy winter coats, pounds upon pounds of equipment, and shivering in the frosty winds on the ski lift. In addition to this, flying down the mountains at high speeds is also associated with the addictive adrenaline rush along with bolting down couloirs, dropping cliffs and jumping out of helicopters into 3 feet of powder. To the everyday folks who fall in love with the sport, skiing is surely much more than that. Skiing is a communion with nature and spirit, and the real essence of skiing is the personal relationship that these selected develop with the experience. To the Scandinavian society, skiing is more than a sport, serving both political and civil roles. It cannot be detached from the ideological and social contexts of the time, especially nationalism.
