The documentary “Sixties: Years that Shaped a Generation” illustrates a period in United States history defined by cultural movement. Several citizen led campaigns were developed to challenge long established American institutions and traditions. This age of defiance, cultivated a counter culture which stood against social injustice, racial inequalities, and the war in Vietnam.

The emergence of the American counter culture in the 1960s was directly connected to the youth of the generation. They vehemently opposed fundamental economic, social, and political doctrines, which they believed previous generations of Americans blindly accepted. The anti-establishment crusade of the counter culture created a Civil War like divide with in the country between traditionalist and reformist. Because the cultural movement was led by young people who opposed authority, traditionalist belittled reformist by attaching a stigma of rebellious adolescent behavior to their cause. There were various groups dedicated to reform, each with their own agenda, that were developing simultaneously. The Hippy movement was comprised mostly of young privileged Anglo-Americans. Their agenda was generally centered on political and social reforms. Concurrently, women of all nationalities and ages were liberating themselves from the limitations of stereotypical gender roles, which society had enforced on them. Similarly, Spanish and African Americans were also locked in a battle to destroy limitations imposed upon them by society based on their race. There was even an air of political revolution trickling down from the government.
