The Holocaust was a tragic and discriminatory event. It was a time when most of the Jewish population of France, the Netherlands, and Greece, as well as hundreds of thousands of the citizens of Poland were killed. The gas chambers took the lives of 437,000 people of the Jewish faith in a matter of weeks. At least 6 million people that practiced the Jewish faith were killed during this horrible time. The reason many Nazis targeted children was because they thought that the survival of the children would lead to future generations of Jewish children. Over 1.1 million children died during the Holocaust. Sir Nicholas Winton saved 669 children from a devastating, life altering, day of torture and doom. Nicholas Winton was a hero, therefore his risk was absolutely worth taking.

He was the oldest of three children from the parents Rudolph and Barbara. His father, Rudolph, was a successful banker who housed his family in a 20 room mansion in West Hampstead, London. Even though he had money, he still helped the poor, needy, children. Nicholas Winton attended Stowe school in Buckingham. He decided to follow in his father's footsteps and apprenticed in international banking. He worked in banks in London, Berlin, and Paris. Then, he decided he wanted to be a stockbroker. So, in 1931 he returned to England to become one. Sir Nicholas Winton had a very successful life.

Although so many lost their lives, many were saved by Sir Nicholas Winton. In fact, 669 children were saved by him, but there could have been many more undocumented children saved. He risked his life to save the children, as well as used his own time and money.
