When a person doesn’t pay attention to the signs around them not only do they get themselves into messes that could’ve been avoided, but they also could lose something of value to them. There were many signs that hinted at important details, yet Gawain ignored them causing his name to be defiled. Later on, a reader learns that the whole thing was all a test of Gawain's character. He had passed except for keeping the lace for himself. There were signs that pointed out to the reader as well what was going to happen and the setting of the story. The year and a day thing is a pagan tradition that was common during the time the story took place. For the reader some of the signs are a little harder to understand. There are some pagan traditions that are referenced as well as Christian tradition references. To modern day people it would be easier to distinguish certain signs than it would be for the knight. To him the woman trying to seduce him may not have meant anything but the reader could've taken it as a sign of foul play. The moral of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight is that not paying attention to the signs around you can end in disaster. Clues were very well hidden in this story and were more difficult to find if you did not know what to look for. The author did a great job of developing Gawain's character and showing his morals only for his character to be defiled in the end.
