In a person’s life, one must overcome obstacles that have the potential to either negatively or positively impact their future. Whether it is a serious obstacle, such as being involved with drugs, or a minor obstacle, such as procrastinating an important essay for the night before it is due, the choices people make can influence the way they live their lives. In Wes Moore’s inspiring non-fiction book, The Other Wes Moore, two boys with the same name start off living a few blocks away from one another, but turn out to be completely different individuals. At first, they were both troublemakers, getting in trouble with the law. However, as time progressed, the author, Wes Moore, became a Rhodes scholar and quite successful, while the other Wes Moore was sentenced to life in prison. The difference between these two men was the surrounding influences that shaped their growth as people. In a person’s growth, the most important factors are a positive role model in a positive environment because a positive role model will provide the path to success and will aid that person in achieving prosperity.
At the age of 11, Michelle won a gold medal at the Southwest Pacific Regionals and a bronze at the Pacific Coast Sectionals. She qualified for the Junior Nationals. Her talents caught the attention of Frank Carroll, so he asked her to be his pupil. Michelle’s persistence continued; she wanted to move up. So without her coach’s permission, she asked her parents to take her to take the “gold test,” which she passed, bringing her to the senior level. Two years later, her determination brought her to third rank in the United States just behind Nancy Kerrigan and Tonya Harding. In January 1994, during the U.S. Nationals, Kerrigan was attacked which caused her to unable to perform in the competition. So Michelle became an alternate and travel with the Olympic team. While she was watching the skaters from the sidelines, she was telling herself that she will be just like them and better.
In the summer of 1996, millions of eyes were glued to the little ladies wearing red, white, and blue as they attempted to do what no one from America had done before: bring home the team gold for the women's gymnastics team at the summer Olympics. It seemed that it had come down to the very last vault. Everyone held their breath as they watched the United States' last chance limp to the start of runway after a disastrous first attempt on the apparatus. Fear and pain were etched into her face as she raised her right arm and sprinted towards the vault. Time stood still as she twisted through the air. The young gymnast's name was Kerri Strug. Kerri's relationships, behaviors, and decisions throughout her life allowed her to achieve many things and to take action in the most adverse and demanding situation of her life, her second vault at the 1996 Summer Olympics (Parrillo n.pag).

Sarah Hughs, Landon Donovan, and Venus Williams, are three of the most recognized athletes in their respective sport. These three athletes are proven champions and have the Olympic medals and championship trophies to prove it. However when one talks about these three athletes their age is rarely the topic of discussion. Each turned professional by their teens, and yet nobody complains about this fact. In leagues such as the NBA and NFL they frown upon high school graduates entering their league. Both leagues have this unwritten rule where eligibility to join the league starts after your sophomore year in college. Profound talent should not be held back; the question to “go pro” for a high school graduate should be decided upon by the athlete.
...become stronger and more ethnically and bodily diverse as a result of Serena Williams presence. Williams inspired young African Americans to become involved in professional athletics when she defied the unspoken rules of game by proving where one is from, what color one’s skin is, what shape one’s body is, and how much money one has, do not matter. In addition, her charitable interests and business deals outside of her sport have developed Williams into the woman she is and made her legacy undeniable. Youth today, are fascinated with Serena Williams and her success. Anyone, even without outside knowledge of tennis, could be drawn to the appeal of a hard working minority woman changing the rules of a game and how society sees that game and its players. The story of inspirational success against all odds is the Story of the queen of the court, Serena Williams.
The book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, was a very interesting story about a young man going to live out in the wild of Alaska. This young mans name is Chris McCandless also known as Alex Supertramp. He had a lot of courage to go out this trip facing the wild. He has set high hopes for how young he is. Graduating college than leaving directly after graduating and burned all of his money and left his car and most possessions behind. His bravery definitely had a big impact on the story. With his bravery, it seemed like he has done this before and has no weariness. Chris was very independent on his trip. He received little help from people. He got work a few times to buy gear for his trip to Alaska, other than that he was either hitch hiking or walking.
But according to Dilley-Knoles in “Making the Grade: Academic Success in Today’s Athlete,” he seems to believe the total opposite. He points out “attention has not always been solely about games and competitions” apparently the “spotlight” has recently been “redirected to academics (Dilley-Knoles). Today, athletes wanting to participate in athletics have to meet specific criteria before being on a team of some sort in high-school (Dilley-Knoles). Knoles explains how over the last few years, the National Collegiate Athletic (NCAA) has created certain standards for academic performance for those students who are in sports (Dilley-Knoles). Certain programs have been created to reward sport teams that do well academically, and penalizing those that don’t (Dilley-Knoles). Although Gabby Douglass was the first women of color “of any nationality and the first African-American gymnast in Olympic history” to become the “Individual All-Around Champion,” I believe the photo shows that athletics was more important than academics (Mike). The young girl below her suggests that she’s more focused on school because she might have not had the same opportunity as Gabby did. Athletes, similar to Gabby, find the pursuit of athletics to be “lucrative” which is something that society values through money (Kannan). In “Which is more important, sports or academics, and how can the choice are
Gabby Douglas was the first African-American female gymnast in Olympic history to become the individual All-Around champion. In the 2012 Olympic Games, she won gold in the team competition and the individual competition. She is a gymnastics phenom. From the beginning of her career to where she is today, she has been a true trooper through everything. Gabrielle Douglas is an inspiration to me and many others because she overcame being homeless, moved in with a new family, and won Olympic gold in gymnastics.
Serena Williams: The embodiment of success. She keeps me hungry for more, both on the court and in the classroom. Whenever I failed a math test for the first time this year, I thought of when she makes a mistake and how she drills her flaws in practice so that it surely will not happen again. Reflecting on this, I did worksheets, watched Khan academy lessons, and mastered the content until 3:30 a.m. on the morning that I was retaking the math test, and received a 100%.
She tried, tried and tried again, for a hole two months, but she wasn’t getting any better. She wasn’t as graceful as the other gymnasts, or even her friends.
