Wicca, witchcraft, and paganism are often grouped together as one term; however, paganism is much more broad than Wicca or Wiccans, who perform witchcraft. These do have their similarities as they are all related to one another. Paganism not only encompasses Wicca but it also encompasses many other people including some witchcraft practitioners. Not all pagans are witches, however, not all witches are pagans either. Witchcraft is a practice and not a religion. This means that one could practice witchcraft with absolutely no religious intent. The practice includes spells, nature worship, and rituals. Contrary to popular belief, very few witches actually practice black magic, which is what people think of then they think of the stereotypical witch. The witches that are pagan are the ones who do witchcraft for a religious reason. The difference between witchcraft and Wicca is that Wiccans all have different belief systems and focus more on that than the actual act of doing magic. Witchcraft, on the other hand, focuses much more specifically on magic and ritual work. A real wiccan compared and contrasted the two by saying “…consider the main differences. In general, Wiccans feel free to review different belief systems, such as Celtic, Norse, Essene, Gnosis, or Shamanism, and then blend together any points that "feel" right into their own personal path. Pure Witchcraft on the other hand, may focus a little more tightly on using Magick and ritual to work with the elemental and spiritual forces in nature. In history the pagans have been viewed as godless infidels. Many who practice paganism live in fear related to the judgment of others that hold differing views on religion. What images come to mind when you think of witches? Many people immediately imagine a black pointy hat, bubbling cauldron, green warty skin, and Halloween. Usually the image that comes to mind is something scary and evil. Real witches do exist. Most modern witches go by the label Wiccan now. Wiccans practice Wicca, which is a nature-based religion with many different branches or denominations. The basic tenant of all Wicca is called the Three Fold Law. The Three Fold Law states that whatever you do will come back to you times three, good or bad, so do not cause harm or, in other words, “harm none”. It is kind of like the concept of karma in one lifetime. There is debate over how old the religion actually is with some saying that it is an ancient religion that pre-dates Christianity and some saying it is more modern, starting in the 1950’s with Gerald Gardener. Regardless of how old the religion is, Hollywood’s portrayal of witches often does have some kernel of truth, albeit sometimes it is hard to find.

The growing practice of Neo-Paganism in America has caused many to turn their heads. The misunderstanding of the religion has caused many to equate the practitioners with the popular conception of typical "witches," that perform black magic rituals, satanic sacrifices, and engage in devil-inspired orgies. After many years, the Neo-Pagan community has cleared up many misconceptions through the showing that many of them do not engage in activities, and are rather participating in a religion, just as those would that participate in a Christian community. It's unacceptance continues, perhaps due to its non-conformity to the ideal of worshipping a Christian God. Through the use of ethnography, anthropologists and sociologists are able to present the public with a much different view than what we are bombarded with in popular media.

Defined by Margot Adler, writer for Reader’s Companion to U.S. Women’s History, “Wicca is the term commonly used to describe several different traditions of contemporary Paganism—an earth-centered religion that reveres nature; celebrates seasonal and lunar cycles; and worships a goddess, or many goddesses, or sometimes a goddess and a god” (637-638). It is a religion that focuses on worshipping an earth god or goddess, using their power and the earth’s elements for good. Witchcraft is said to be the most widespread cultural phenomenon in existence today and throughout history. Even those who shun the ideas of witchcraft cannot discount the similarities in stories from all corners of the globe. Witchcraft and its ideas have spread across racial, religious, and language barriers from Asia to Africa to America. Primitive people from different areas in the world have shockingly similar accounts of witchcraft occurrences. In most cases the strange parallels cannot be explained and one is only left to assume that the tales hold some truth. Anthropologists say that many common elements about witchcraft are shared by different cultures in the world. Among these common elements are the physical characteristics and the activities of supposed witches. I will go on to highlight some of the witch characteristic parallels found in printed accounts from different parts of the world and their comparisons to some famous fairytales.
Hoodoo and Witchcraft are in the realm on practices of magic. Hoodoo and Witchcraft are both used today to help with love, money, luck and success. Even though the people who practice either magic for good, these practices can also be used in a negative and dark manner. Both are similar in many ways but take in count that Hoodoo originated in Africa and practiced within African American slaves while Witchcraft originated in Europe among the people. Both occult practices may have similar rituals, spells, and ideas but a strong difference between the two is that Hoodoo does not believe in Karma while Witchcraft heavily believes in the idea of it.

They argue that as a solitary you would already know the ritual and this would negate the effect. Today there are actually many different forms of the Wiccan religion such as Hereditary/Family tradition, Celtic, Gardnerian, Shamanic, Faerie, Dianic just to name a few of the many that exist.
