Wicca, witchcraft, and paganism are often grouped together as one term; however, paganism is much more broad than Wicca or Wiccans, who perform witchcraft. These do have their similarities as they are all related to one another. Paganism not only encompasses Wicca but it also encompasses many other people including some witchcraft practitioners. Distinguishing these three things is a difficult task and much information is required in order to accomplish it. Paganism is an umbrella term that is used to describe many faiths. Originally many Christians grouped all people who were part of a religion that is not Christianity as Pagan. Not all pagans are witches, however, not all witches are pagans either. Witchcraft is a practice and not a religion. This means that one could practice witchcraft with absolutely no religious intent. The practice includes spells, nature worship, and rituals. Contrary to popular belief, very few witches actually practice black magic, which is what people think of then they think of the stereotypical witch. The witches that are pagan are the ones who do witchcraft for a religious reason. The difference between witchcraft and Wicca is that Wiccans all have different belief systems and focus more on that than the actual act of doing magic. Witchcraft, on the other hand, focuses much more specifically on magic and ritual work. A real wiccan compared and contrasted the two by saying “…consider the main differences. In general, Wiccans feel free to review different belief systems, such as Celtic, Norse, Essene, Gnosis, or Shamanism, and then blend together any points that "feel" right into their own personal path. Pure Witchcraft on the other hand, may focus a little more tightly on using Magick and ritual to work with the elemental and spiritual forces in nature. Regardless, I feel the differences are slight in that Wicca and Witchcraft both work to achieve balance and harmony within nature and self”
