Heroes and role models are what give people faith in humanity. Through their actions and morals, people admire and respect them for the examples they set and the actions they take to make the world a better place, and to stand up for what they believe in and for what is right. Both heroes and role models are indispensable to our world, but they both play different roles that are equally important to society. In Harper Lee’s timeless fictional piece To Kill a Mockingbird, she shows that these special members of society are important, but different. Atticus Finch is an attorney and loving father to his two kids, Scout and Jem. He defies the social code of their small southern town, Maycomb County and never questions if he should do the right thing even when most of the county is against him. Through their morals and actions, they become respected and revered within their respected society. Atticus Finch is the definite role model for Maycomb County. He boldly defies the strict and prejudice social code of his time, and passes his insights onto his children and the town. “’… on the assumption-the evil assumption- that all Negroes lie… an assumption one associates with minds of their caliber…. You know the truth and the truth is this: some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral… But this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men, ‘” (Lee 119). Lee weaves into Atticus the importance of a role model, and what a role model should be in society. The decision to tell the entire town that they are starkly wrong with regards to how they view African Americans elevates him to being the quintessential role model. Not only does Atticus stand up for justice and demonstrate his virtuous character in the court room, but also at home with his kids and to his neighbors in town.
