When writing a captivating short story it is important to build a strong plot progression, conflict, and message throughout the text. The message of a story is also called the “theme”. The reason for a theme in a story is to give the reader something to “take with them” as they read through the dialog. It is typical to find deep, meaningful, and thought provoking themes in these short stories; the author aims to make a strong point in few words. “The Rocking Horse Winner” by D.H. In this particular village, there is a ritual of a lottery. This ritual is annual, inclusive to all in the village, and not a lottery of money. Shirley sets the scene as such, “The people of the village began to gather in the square, between the post office and the bank, around ten o'clock.” As they gathered the facilitator of the drawing, Mr. Summer, began to call names. Each family would be represented, and each would draw one card from the black box. As they went through the list of families, the anxiety and tension grew. After each head of family drew a card, they opened them simultaneously. All but one sighed with relief. The person holding a single card with a single black dot had won the lottery. On this day it was the Hutchinson family who won the first round. Then the papers would be collected and each member of the family would draw a paper again. This was the last time of drawing. The Hutchinson family had a father, mother, few kids, and little baby. The one at the end of this round would be named the big winner! But the prize was not one to be desired. And so they drew one more time. It came to be that the winner was Mrs. Hutchinson. The ritual is finished by a stoning of the winner.
