Muhammad Ali Jinnah famously once said, “You will have to make up for the smallness of your size by your courage and selfless devotion to duty, for it is not life that matters, but the courage, fortitude and determination you bring to it.” The book, The Alchemist, was written in 1983 A.D. while, The Odyssey, was written at the end of the 8th century, between 750 and 650 B.C. In both books, the main characters Odysseus and Santiago, go on long journeys. Both journeys are for the characters benefit. At the end of their journeys, they accomplish their goals and are happier. In the novels, The Odyssey by Homer and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Odysseus has a more purposeful journey than Santiago through his hero-like personality.
The main character of The Odyssey, Odysseus, had a journey that tested his loyalty and selflessness. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus does not give up his loyalty to home. This is shown on page 1209, when Odysseus says, “My lady goddess, …show more content…

In The Alchemist, Santiago was already happy before his journey. On page 6, Santiago knew that “Shepherds, like seamen and like travelling salesmen, always found a town where there was someone who could make them forget the joys of carefree wandering.” (Coelho 6). This shows that he already had joy and was going to feel more joy when he met the merchant’s daughter again. Since he was already happy, he did not need to go on his journey. Conversely, in The Odyssey, Odysseus was not already content with his life and needed to get home. On page 1209, Odysseus tells Calypso, “My lady goddess, here is no cause for anger. My quiet Penelope—how well I know— would seem a shade before your majesty, death and old age being unknown to you, while she must die. Yet, it is true, each day I long for home, long for the sight of home. . . .” (Homer 5.81). This shows that he is unhappy with where he is and wants to continue on his journey
