A well written piece of literature reveals so much more then one could read in a history book. The early 1900’s were a time of great struggles , hardship, and also prosperity. These effects were reflected in the writings of the time. Great Authors like Fitzgerald , Welty , and Heminway display personal attributes in their writings that reflected the times. From the 1920’s when times were good and the rich prospered to the 1930’s when people struggled and had to stick together to make it , to the 1940’s when war struck the peoples with fear and grief these authors have effected literature forever.
F Scott Fitzgerald is one of the writers whose works depicted his life. He grew up in a wealthy family and was very well educated. He attended Princeton University. In his short story Winter Dream he writes of a young man who is raised in a working class family , but has great dreams and aspirations for Wealth( 942 Fitzgerald) . He works very hard and before age 24 he becomes very wealthy .He started as a caddy who waited hand and feet on the upper class, and through education and hard work he became part of the upper class (944 Fitzgerald). He writes of a group of soldiers who had been wounded in battle and have come together in a hospital to recuperate ( 970 Hemingway). The American soldier in the story shares tales of his medals and how they were earned . This only made the his companions judge him for they did not receive medals for the sacrifice (973 Heminway). He often judged himself and wondered if he would ever be the same again. Could he still be brave ? “I was very much afraid to died , and often I lay in bed at night by myself, afraid to die and wonder how I would be when I went back to the front again” (973 Heminway). F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, “The Great Gatsby”, and Baz Luhrmann’s film, “The Great Gatsby”, both have similarities and contrasts between the two of them. The Great Gatsby is a novel and film taken place in the 1920s filled with wild parties, mysterious people, The American Dream, and most of all, love. There are several things that can be compared between the novel and film; such as the characters and the setting. There are also contrasts between the two as well; which is mainly involving the character Nick.
Hawthorne and Fitzgerald, two great American romantics, display new attitudes towards nature, humanity, and society within their novels. The novels The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby are very similar with their adjacent themes, motifs, and symbols. The comparison between these two literary pieces show the transition from adultery to ability, societal standards during the chosen time periods, and good vs. evil.
All stories have the same blueprint structure with the same type of ending whether it be good triumphs over evil, rags to riches, the voyage and the return, tragedy, or rebirth. The thing that sets these stories apart is the message they intend to in our minds. “ The power of a story to shift and show itself to anew is part of what attracts people to it, at different ages, in different moods, with different concerns” (Auxier 7). These messages are given by the characters in the story that all have their own reasoning but in the end have one meaning behind it. Francis Scott Fitzgerald, also known under his writer’s name, F. Scott Fitzgerald, is revered as a famous American novelist for his writing masterpieces in the 1920’s and 1930’s. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote about his extravagant lifestyle in America that his wife, Zelda, their friends, and him lived during that era. In fact, a lot of his novels and essays were based off of real-life situations with exaggerated plots and twists. F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels were the readers looking glass into his tragic life that resulted in sad endings in his books, and ultimately his own life. F. Scott Fitzgerald lived in a nice neighborhood, but growing up, he wasn’t privileged.
During the course of the semester, I covered many topics during this class. These topics consist of; The Great Gatsby, The topic of Rationalism, Romanticism/transcendentalism, The crucible, and Fahrenheit 451. In this assignment, I was asked to summarise each topic with a single thing I could use to describe the meaning of the topic. I chose to summarise each topic in terms of a single quote. I chose quotes because of the open-mindedness of quotes. Everyone sees quotes differently, and they have different meanings for everyone. They are often used to express opinions, or public knowledge led to educate and inspire others.
In Hemingway’s short story “Soldier’s Home”, Hemingway introduces us to a young American soldier, that had just arrived home from World War I. Harold Krebs, our main character, did not receive a warm welcome after his arrival, due to coming home a few years later than most soldiers. After arriving home, it becomes clear that World War I has deeply impacted the young man, Krebs is not the same man that headed off to the war. The war had stripped the young man of his coping mechanism, female companionship, and the ability to achieve the typical American life.
Women wear pink, boy wear blue. Women play with dolls, boys play with trucks. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, and the film Chicago by Rob Marshall, focus mainly in the 1920s and how the characters reinforce the gender roles that women are helpless, feminine, and constantly seek the approval of men, whereas the female characters in the film Chicago are independent and self,confident; however, in both pieces, jealousy leads to negative consequences for women.
Every person has different characteristics, as everyone has different family background, which can make a significant effect on people’s characteristics. In addition, people’s properties can also represent their characteristics. In The Great Gatsby, the main characters, Nick, Gatsby and the Buchanans all have different kinds of houses and we can discover their social positions, lifestyles and personalities by their homes.
Throughout the history of literature, a great deal of authors has tried to reveal a clear understanding of the American Dream. Whether it is possible to achieve lies all in the character the author portrays. The Great Gatsby and The Catcher in the Rye stand as prime examples of this. F. Scott Fitzgerald and J.D. Salinger, the authors of these titles, respectively, fashion flawed characters, Jay Gatsby and Holden Caulfield, with one vital desire: the longing to gain what they can’t have; acceptance and the feeling of belonging. Each retaining characteristics that shows their differences and similarities in opinion of the world around them.
Within the debate on who is to be crowned the “Great American Novel,” a valid factor that may be taken into consideration is how ideals in culture become altered with an evolving environment, and therefore, the argument can be made on the behalf of The Great Gatsby to be considered for the title. Due to its more recent ideological concepts, the novel addresses American ideals that are not fully developed or addressed at all within The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. These ideals can be boiled down to primarily two concepts: the fully-developed American dream of richness and upper-class goals, and consumerism in the industrialization of America. Never let your dreams be dreams, go out and get what you want. This is one of my go to sayings when I’m making a tough decision. Judgement is one of my greatest fears and this saying reminds me to do what I really want. Both books, Of Mice and Men and The Great Gatsby are inspiring stories about men pursuing their dreams. Even though neither of the characters got the dream they intended the work ethic and drive they put into reaching their goals was truly amazing.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams share and explore themes and techniques of imprisonment, by both mental and physical means. To explore imprisonment, both writers use characters and narration techniques to express themes of illusion and reality by characterisation, the American Dream in symbolism, and entrapment by responsibility through narration structure. While both authors express a story, Tennessee Williams uses play direction, while F. Scott Fitzgerald uses novel structure to convey the ideas of imprisonment.
In writing this book, commonly refered to as the “Great American Novel”, F. Scott Fitzgerald achieved in showing future generations what the early twenties were like, and the kinds of people that lived then. He did this in a beautifully written novel with in-depth characters, a captivating plot, and a wonderful sense of the time period.
