A well written piece of literature reveals so much more then one could read in a history book. The early 1900’s were a time of great struggles , hardship, and also prosperity. These effects were reflected in the writings of the time. Great Authors like Fitzgerald , Welty , and Heminway display personal attributes in their writings that reflected the times. From the 1920’s when times were good and the rich prospered to the 1930’s when people struggled and had to stick together to make it , to the 1940’s when war struck the peoples with fear and grief these authors have effected literature forever.
F Scott Fitzgerald is one of the writers whose works depicted his life. He grew up in a wealthy family and was very well educated. He attended Princeton University. In his short story Winter Dream he writes of a young man who is raised in a working class family , but has great dreams and aspirations for Wealth( 942 Fitzgerald) . He works very hard and before age 24 he becomes very wealthy .He started as a caddy who waited hand and feet on the upper class, and through education and hard work he became part of the upper class (944 Fitzgerald). He writes of a group of soldiers who had been wounded in battle and have come together in a hospital to recuperate ( 970 Hemingway). The American soldier in the story shares tales of his medals and how they were earned . This only made the his companions judge him for they did not receive medals for the sacrifice (973 Heminway). He often judged himself and wondered if he would ever be the same again. Could he still be brave ? “I was very much afraid to died , and often I lay in bed at night by myself, afraid to die and wonder how I would be when I went back to the front again” (973 Heminway).
