Context is revolved around the experience of the author, shaping the characters and the overall values of the text. J.D Salinger’s 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye and Francois Truffaut’s 1959 film The 400 Blows portrays such similarities from opposite ends of the decade to distinguish their values generated from the important issue they experienced through time. In catcher in the rye, Salinger creates Holden's red hunting hat as a symbol of uniqueness and individuality. The hat is outlandish, and it shows that Holden desires to be different from everyone around him. Salinger displays this symbol, because throughout the 1950s there was a distinct line between right and wrong in society. Also through his war time experience he had to obey authority figures and the way they expected him to act, which left no room for personal identity to be explored. Holden uses direct address “I forgot to tell you about that. They kicked me out.” which depicts his last expulsion. Salinger displays a euphemism to suggest Holden is failing at school and doesn’t seem to care. Holden tries to avoid reality, highlighting his individual mentality in life. Salinger indicates that schools and other institutions do not help or support people who are different or struggling mentally, Salinger also got kicked out of many schools. This context of Salinger depicts how Holden as a character is form from his contextual experience in life. In 400 blows , At one point, a wide shot depicts Antoine’s teacher’s exasperation at the child’s antics. The teacher’s dialogue is, “I pity your parents and France in ten years”. This acknowledges the conflict between the older and younger generations, because the younger generations are trying to develop their own individual personalities, but the older generations are too fixed on the stereotypical lifestyle they grew up with. Truffaut didn’t respond well with authority when he was in school causing him to get in trouble frequently. Throughout the last scene of the film Truffaut positions the camera angle to be a wide shot of the ocean and ends with a final image as a mid shot of Antoine looking at the camera with the sea in the background.
