The rejection of change is merely a temporary halt in the progression of humanity. Between the poem The Seafarer and the story Beowulf, the idea of progression reveals conflicts in ideas. The Seafarer has convinced himself that his people are strong and full of glory, while the youth are weak and tarnishing said glory. Beowulf’s representation of youth as a saving crutch for an old hero, once able to accomplish impossible feats but has grown frail over the years, recognizes the other side to the conflict of progression. Changes in humanity are not accepted and are fought against by many while the opposing side accepts these changes openly and adapts to them.
