Ancient Rome and ancient China were very different from each other in some ways, but they were also very alike in other ways, too. You can determine this by using the six characteristics of a civilization. The six characteristics are government, which is how the civilization is controlled and the laws that were made, Job specialization, which are jobs like teachers or artisans, Social classes, or how the civilization categorizes people based on wealth, Institutions such as education, religion, and art, and finally, records, which is writing or what they wrote about, how and why. The government in ancient China and ancient Rome are completely different. Ancient China’s government was ruled by one person, an emperor, but it wasn't like this until the Qin Dynasty in 221 BC. The Qin Dynasty will set the foundation for the rest of the Chinese government in the future. In Rome, a person could have been a farmer, soldier, merchant, craftsmen, entertainer, teacher, lawyer or engineer. Being a farmer was the most common job in Rome and they planted wheat, grapes, and olives. Some would even raise cattle, goats, and sheep. Farmers were important because they kept the trade going and helped feed families. Another important job was being a craftsman. This was an important job because not only did craftsmen make plates and jewelry to sell, but they also make weapons for wars and battles. Merchants were usually on the wealthier side of society because it kept Rome wealthy through trade. Being a teacher or educator in Rome was more common than in China.
