The main characters in “A&P” by John Updike and “Araby” by James Joyce experience an epiphany. Sammy and Araby’s individual quests gave them a perception of the harsh actualities that come with adulthood. Epiphany helped Sammy and Araby gain experience and knowledge. Overall, epiphany is significant to both “A&P” and “Araby”. Considering this, Sammy from “A&P” completes a feat that lead him to his epiphany. Sammy’s quest is to save three girls in bathing suits from ignominy when his boss is being negligent. Sammy decides to confront his boss about embarrassing the girls, hoping to seek their attention as he quits. Sammy failed to gain their attention because they left without noticing him. Araby has a crush on Mangan and promises to buy her something from the bazaar after they talked for the first time. When Araby is in the bazaar, he realizes that his conversation with Mangan was just meaningless small talk and that she doesn’t care about him. Sammy’s quest didn’t have meaning because his intentions weren’t genuine… he didn’t do it from the heart because he was interested in Queenie’s physique. In reality, Sammy was just defending his hormones because he felt really attracted to Queenie’s appearance. The author says,”…it just having come from between the two smoothest scoops of vanilla I had ever known were there…” (Updike, pg.3) This shows how Sammy is more focused on her body than for her true inner self. Therefore, this was not an honorable quest because he did it because of his teenage boy hormones. Sammy’s day-to-day experiences weren’t significant either because he is just a regular teenage boy who was can be considered lower-class because he works in a grocery store. Similarly, Araby’s quest wasn’t significant. Araby’s goal was to make his crush happy by buying her something from the bazaar, but his crush is not interested in him. Araby is so caught up in his endearment for her he doesn’t realize that he isn’t considering his chances with her. His quest was pointless because even if he had succeeded in buying her something, she wouldn’t have cared because all they had was small talk. Araby got nothing in exchange for trying except a broken heart. Araby’s day-to-day experiences didn’t have significance either because he is just an average everyday school
