It is the time of the French Revolution. There is tension between the Second and Third Estates in France. The peasants in the third estate are being treated as if they are not people, and that is why Charles Darnay, an aristocrat, gives up his title. He sees no point in living on the backs of the peasants. Sydney Carton, an English attorney, feels there is no point in living at all. He has no intentions of committing suicide, but has no purpose or meaning in his life, until he meets Lucie. Carton is envious of Darnay for having Lucie's love. Although Darnay and Carton look very similar, they have very different personalities, but Lucie affects both of them. Darnay's life is changed because he marries Lucie. Darnay was accused of being a traitor to the English in the beginning of the novel. Fortunately he was found innocent because him and Carton have very similar looks. During the trial, Darnay meets Lucie and falls in love with her. The two get married and have a child. This shows he loves her, but he shows true love when he lets them go to save someone his family has hurt. Darnay is a relative of the Marquis, who's house keeper has been put in jail. Darnay knows saving Gabelle puts him at great risk, but he has to do it for himself. Darnay also showed his love for Lucie when he accepts Carton's friendship. After this acceptance, Darnay tells Lucie Carton is reckless and careless.
