In the movie Silver Linings Playbook, the protagonist, Pat has been released from a mental hospital. Pat is hospitalized after discovering his wife, Nicky, cheating with the high school history teacher, and almost beating him to death. During his hospital stay, Pat is diagnosed with Bipolar I disorder. Bipolar disorder is very difficult to diagnose, often times it is difficult to diagnose due to its similarities with other disorders (Craighead, Miklowitz, & Craighead, 2013, p. 364). Bipolar I order is a very debilitating mental disorder due to its symptomology and how much it negatively impacts the client’s ability to function. Symptoms of patients who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder include depression, anxiety, guilt and suicidal thoughts and energetic periods which include irritability, short temperedness, and erratic judgment (Butcher, Hooley, & Mineka, 2014, p. 240).

I watched the movie Silver Linings Playbook. The main character, Pat, has bipolar disorder. Although this is stated about a fourth of the way through the movie, I don’t think it would have been a hard diagnosis to make. Pat has very dramatic mood swings, and is quick to go from very sad to very “up” as his father calls it. Another symptom is having states of depression. There are definitely points in the movie where you can tell he is in a depressed state, but the defining characteristic of bipolar disorder is having manic states as well. I think that Pat definitely shows himself as being manic at several points in the movie. Often when people are manic they come up with these great big ideas that may not be attainable, as Pat often does with the idea that he will be able to get back together with his wife if he loses weight and always finds the “silver lining.” He even appeared to be suffering from delusions, as he states in this therapist’s office. All these symptoms together would make me sure bipolar disorder was the right diagnosis.

The characteristics of bipolar disorder are significant shifts in mood that go from manic episodes to deep depressive episodes in a up and down trip that seemingly never ends. There are actually three types of bipolar disorder. In bipolar III disorder there is a family history of mania or hypomania in addition to the client experiencing depressive episodes. This category is not highly used but is worth noting. Bipolar II disorder is marked by hypomanic episodes that have not required hospitalization. Bipolar I disorder is the full-blown illness and is defined by the presence of manic episodes which require treatment, and usually hospitalization (Wilner 44).
Bipolar Disorder can be classified by the occurrence of manic episodes followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, extensive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day. During the specific period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, many symptoms are present. Before watching this film, I had an idea of what bipolar disorder is , but after viewing this film I was completely mistaken. Previously, I thought being bipolar was going from a “normal” mood to an angry or sad mood in a matter of seconds and could be simply fixed by taking medicine. But my previous thoughts were completely wrong and bipolar disorder is very serious and complicated.
