Negative: The Driving Age Should Not Be Changed Turning sixteen and finally being able to get a license is a big step in a teenager’s life. With this comes independance and less reliance on their parents. It is clear that age does not affect a person’s driving as much as experience and with proper training sixteen year olds can gain the experience they need. The driving age has been sixteen for a long time and it doesn’t need to change now. Contention 1: When driving, experience behind wheel is far more important. The reason for teen car accidents is not that they are more dangerous because they are under eighteen, it is because they have so little driving experience. It is a lot safer to apply driving restrictions to teens until they are safe enough to drive on their own. This way they can gain experience in a safe way until they are not as much of a hazard on the road. Teens need independence, experience and proper training. This would greatly impact the number of teen collisions that are happening now and help to lessen those numbers. It is unfair to prevent all sixteen year olds from driving because of the traffic accidents of a minority of teens. It would be much more effective to introduce better restrictions on these new driver’s in order for them to gain experience in a controlled environment until they are safe to drive alone. A better, more well rounded, driving education would also help. In an article from The Seattle Times that asks teens thoughts on the subject, one says, “‘If adults put time into helping kids drive rather than ranting about them, then kids would learn how to make good decisions and drive well,’” (The Seattle Times). These tragic deaths from teenage driving accidents can be reduced but the way to do it is not by raising the driving
