The subject of allowing teachers and faculty to conceal and carry guns in schools has always been a very difficult topic for most people. On one side of the fence, people want teachers and faculty to carry guns in school because of all the recent school shootings. Then you have those who think that letting teachers and faculty carry guns in a school is a bad thing for multiple reasons. There is one more group that is in the middle that want to teachers and faculty to carry weapons into schools, but with heavy restrictions. Firstly I would like to go over the laws around allowing teachers and faculty to bring guns into a school. The training camp also tries to make the situations as realistic as possible, so that when these teachers are faced with an issue they have some form of similar training. The majority of the few states that allow teachers and possibly other members of the school to carry guns on their schools premises require that the teachers have a concealed and carry license and some form of training whether it be one of the many training schools or another form of military or law enforcement training Next I would like to talk about those who are against teachers and faculty having some form of a gun on a schools premises and why they don't want it to happen. Even though there has been a rise of school shootings and other safety issues there are still plenty of people that are against teacher having a gun on a school's campus. The National School Safety and Security Services says a few things about why they are against arming teachers and school faculty. They say that the schools should leave the safety of the school up to the school's School Resource Officer (SRO) and school police department officers. One response to the rise in gun violence in schools is to arm teachers. Even our President has mentioned “giving a bonus” (Davis 2) to teachers that The fact that the idea of arming teachers is even being discussed is disappointing. With the increase of violence in schools, parents have started to wonder if their children are really safe in the school setting.     One reason teachers should not be able to carry guns because guns are currently illegal in schools; Guns are illegal because they are dangerous. The Gun Free School Zone Act (GFSZA) is a federal law that was accepted in the United States in 1990. According to the GFSZA, “It shall be unlawful for any individual knowingly to possess a firearm at a place that the individual knows, or has reasonable cause to believe, is a school zone.” In order for teachers to carry guns, we would have to discard this law. Also, the school board would have to create a new policy, allowing teachers to carry guns. Adjusting the rules would be time consuming and confusing. Changing the GFSZA would make students tense and distract children from learning. Citizens from CNN Politics say, “72.4% of educators said they would be unlikely to bring a firearm to school if allowed to do so.” This data shows that the majority of teachers do not even want possession of a gun in the classroom. School officers have the right to carry guns, teachers should just focus on education. Not only does it create a huge responsibility, there would also need to be a large financial investment to supply guns for every school. This money would be hard to come up with, and not everyone is in favor of sacrificing money for firearms.
