Should Schools Have Competitive Sports In High School?

For many decades, competitive sports have been apart of high schools across the country. This argument about if schools should have competitive sports or should schools only focus on the education, has most likely been around for quite some time now. But as long as high schools have provided these competitive sports, many students who have participated in them, have had success and just fine self-esteems in their lives. Although competitive sports sometimes become a bigger deal than they should be, having this competition has taught many students good life lessons that they can use in their future. Many things can ruin a student’s self-esteem, not just competitive sports in particular. “The self-esteem movement holds that the key to happiness is to feel good about yourself. You should eliminate issues that make you feel inferior, such as getting smoked in a sporting event” (Whitley). Although many people may agree with this statement, it’s not beneficial to anyone's life. People are going to face certain situations that could possibly lower their self-esteem sometime during their lifetime. So through these high school competitive sports, students could learn how to handle certain situations that could lower their self-esteem. Without high school competitive sports, students may not experience these issues until they get into the real world, which may not go as well as if they learned how to handle these issues during their four years of participating in competitive sports. I believe playing a sport in high school helps students focus more on keeping their grades up in school. Most high schools don’t allow their students to participate in sports or any other after school activities if their grades are under a certain grade point average. I feel like by enforcing this particular rule, it helps student athletes work hard and take their education seriously, so that they are able to participate in the school sport. From a personal experience, I think it’s motivating to play a sport while going to high school. That’s because the sport motivates me to do well in school so I can be apart of the team and participate in the games. Competitive sports have had an impact on many people’s lives. They will most likely continue to have an impact on people’s lives until they get banished from schools, which would be a huge debate all over the United States. Many people have their own opinions on if competitive sports are good or bad. But I think if schools were to get rid of competitive sports, it would have more of a negative affect than a positive affect. That’s because students may never learn some of the lessons they will and have learned from these high school competitive
