In the United States of America 72 percent of the police officers are Caucasian, while only 12 percent are African American, according to the United States census bureau. Sadly, when performing research about police brutality, race seems to be a common topic that presents itself. Although, police brutality is not about racism, it is hard to ignore the topic because of the negative publicity police officers are getting in today’s news. Unfortunately, the majority of the police brutality reports are focused on the demographic of African American males. Some citizens in America believe that excessive force is needed in order to keep communities safe. One program that has been initiated in some major cities around the country, is the mandatory requirement for police officers to wear a body camera. This program protects officers from violating the code of conduct for law enforcement, and also mitigates potential hostel situations for the police officer. It is easy for a situation to go from bad to worse. Body cameras keeps all partied involve honest, and the data recorded can be utilize to provide additional training to the police officers. The Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Police Services (COPS) stated, body cameras on police officers increase transparency from police and witnesses, with a result of reduced complaints of force used by officers (Fieldstadt par. 7). The use of body cameras have shown to be quite effective and although reports about police brutality is often the headline in our news, violence against police officers is also another serious problem in the USA as well. The FBI preliminary statistic report shows that 51 law enforcement officers were killed in 2014, which is an approximate 89 percent increase from 2013, when 27 deaths was reported, the lowest in 35 years ("FBI — FBI Releases 2014 Preliminary Statistics for Law Enforcement Officers Killed in the Line of Duty" par.
