Players in the NBA certainly do make a lot of money. Many people think it’s preposterous, outrageous, and unreasonable the amount of money they earn. They may also think that these players are selfish and don’t earn their money. Since getting to the NBA and playing there is somehow a cake walk, and you are handed a massive contract without having to earn it, they don’t deserve big contracts. Getting to the NBA and staying there is an incredible task and players are rewarded accordingly. Although NBA players do make a lot money, they earn the money they get from their contract, and deserve all of what they receive.
With all the money these athletes are being paid they are selfish with it. Players are always looking for the contract with the highest number on it. Why could that be? They want all that money to spend on themselves. They always have the newest and nicest of everything. Not only do they have the newest and nicest things they have an excess amount of everything. Players in the NBA last much longer in their respective sport than a NFL player does. The average NFL player plays for 3.5 years (BleacherReport) compared to 4.8 years in the NBA (BleacherReport). This shows that players in the NBA should be making more money because they play longer. Since they play longer they are more valuable to their team and harder to replace. A NFL player is much easier to find a backup or replacement since, there are almost four times as many NFL roster spots as NBA roster spots. Players do not deserve the money they receive. There are people who do much more than the players do. Why do teachers not get paid millions of dollars to teach kids? Some of those kids end up going on to become professional athletes. Police officers and firemen risk their lives to keep people safe and most of them do not even make any more than 95 thousand dollars a year (Megerian). These athletes get fined more money than that and hand it over like someone just asked them for one dollar. Players have all of this money and do not even do anything worth earning it. Isn't it amazing how one little controversial question can cause so much drama? Take the NCAA for instance. Within recent years the question of weather NCAA athletes should be paid or not has arisen and caused them some unwanted attention. Many coaches and sports enthusiast have been interviewed on their opinion. “Students are not professional athletes who are paid salaries and incentives for a career in sports. They are students receiving access to a college education through their participation in sports, for which they earn scholarships to pay tuition, fees, room and board, and other allowable expenses,” (Mitchell). “There has been major discussion recently if college athletes should or shouldn't be paid while they are in school. The first thing opponents say is, "They're already getting a scholarship! That is more than anybody else! Don't be greedy!”(Hartnett). These are just two men’s opinions, but no one needs to give his or her opinion any longer. The answer to this question is unmistakably clear. NCAA athletes do not need to be paid because they get to go to college for free, their living expenses are paid for, and there would not be a fair way to choose which teams are paid and which are not.

In trying to decide what research topic I wanted to use, I took many ideas into thought. I decided that the one idea that interests me most is whether student athletes should be paid or not. This is very intriguing to me since my master’s program is sports management. In order to do this research there must be many ways to use research as well as ideas from other people. This project is a very big topic in today’s discussion amongst sport fans, college administrators, and student athletes themselves. Media has recently put more pressure on this topic as well with the Northwestern decision to unionize as well as pointing out an athletic director gaining an $18,000 supplement for a wrestler at their school winning a national championship. To gain a better idea on this very topic, I would like to do an extensive research on how many variables could affect different people or universities from the idea of student athletes being paid from their university.
Do you think professional athletes are overpaid? You might think they earn more than what they are worth for playing half a year, but athletes have many things which contribute to their salary. In Sociology of the American sport, Eitzen and Sage describe the hegemony theory as sports being a means by which we teach values and cultural ideas of what is right and wrong (Eitzen & Sage, 2016). One issue that these high salaries cause is that having all this money spoils the athletes. Athletes buy so much unnecessary stuff after they get their money. For example, Michael Jordan has about 28 cars. Who needs all these cars? He didn’t buy all of these, but there is a certain limit on how many cars a person needs. Athletes spend their money on cars, entertainment, clothes, and their big mansions. Another instance of athletes spoiling themselves is the use of illegal drugs (“Pro Salaries”). Ray Lewis, a safety for the Baltimore Ravens, is being tried for two accounts of murder. He is an excellent athlete. He is on the pro-bowl team for the 1999 season and led the league in tackles. He has just ruined his career by even being involved in a situation like this. Another player is Robert Lewis, a 20 year-old basketball player from the Dallas Mavericks. He was convicted of beating his girlfriend almost to death. A 20-year-old basketball star doesn’t need to feel that he is a king to be a leader. What kind of role model is he setting to other youngsters that want to follow in the same footsteps?
Sport has always entertained and influenced our lives. It creates dreams for children and goals for adults. However, many fans are oblivious to the millions they pocket each year. It is without doubt that our sports stars are grossly overpaid. Their annual earnings exceed those we make in a lifetime, even when compared to highly qualified professions.
