What is an Autonomous car? A Autonomous car is a self driving car basically. It automatically drives itself by navigating and using sensors to recognize its environment, follows traffic laws, and detects and avoids obstacles all without any input from humans. Could it help lower vehicular accidents? Are computer better drivers than humans? I think autonomous cars should not be legal. I don’t think technology is yet that advanced and ready for that leap into the future. In my opinion driverless cars need more testing before being approved. I will give my reasons why autonomous cars should not be legal throughout the essay. Autonomous cars are dangerous, technology needs more time to progress and become better over time. So they can eliminate those mistakes and save an estimated 31,000 lives a year. But a small accident involving google's autonomous lexus and a public bus shows that driverless cars that drive themselves can make mistakes. If autonomous cars are the answer to reducing accidents, they'll first have to gain the public's trust. A January poll found that 75 percent of US drivers are afraid to ride in a Autonomous car. Vehicle manufacturers have begun to offer or announced plans to offer in the next several model years certain types of automated crash avoidance safety systems as features on new vehicles. NHTSA has been actively involved in researching these technologies, which depend on vehicle sensors and cameras to obtain safety critical data. NHTSA is engaged in research to evaluate the effectiveness of currently available automated braking systems in avoiding crashes.
