Cell Phones: Useful tool in School Ninety-three percent of teens with a cell phone agree with the statement: “I feel safer because I can always use my cell phone to get help” (53). The idea of a problem and solution combination has been around since the beginning of mankind. Everyone has encountered some sort of problem in his or her life, but not everyone comes up with a solution. Some people chose to ignore the problem and leave it be until it goes away, while others plan out a solution and execute it to eliminate the problem. First, there is a lack of emergency accessibility. So if there happened to be an intruder in the school and a student was able to get out of the school but didn’t have their cell phone on them, they would have no way to get a hold of their parent to tell them they are okay or to get them to come pick them up. Next, more students are getting in trouble that normally wouldn’t because of cell phones. Most students use their phones in school even when there is a rule against it, so even the best students, who don’t get in trouble, are getting in trouble over having their phone in class. Lastly, there are students who pay less attention in classes because they feel the need to hide that they are checking their phone. The boom of technology and teenagers “need” for electronic communication has caused this problem. If you are asking yourself “Why hasn’t this been fixed yet?” allow me to explain. In the past, students have used their phones in school to cheat and bully each other on social media. Due to these problems, the obvious solution is not adequate, but there are some negative consequences if it is not solved. First, students will continue to use them and try to hide it from their teacher, but get caught and end up getting in trouble. In 2012, there was a school shooting in Chardon, Ohio, and police said that cellphone calls and texts enabled Chardon students to contact parents after the shootings and let them know they were safe. In addition, many of the early 9-1-1 calls came through cellphones which saved many lives (Ohio). This has become a very serious issue in the last couple years because of the increase in school shootings. "The issue of security and red alerts on terrorism threats became an issue, and school systems began to relax the prohibition on cellphones in schools," said Dan Domenech, the executive director of the American Association of School Administrators (Higgins). The need for communication in a time of emergency is a very basic concept, but in this day and age, the way people communicate is through cell phones. In the technologically advanced society we live in, the fact that so many people communicate only from behind a screen is not surprising. Students in school are definitely no exception to this new way of communication, and it has just become a way of life. By school administration demonstrating respect of how students communicate using cell phones and recognizing that it may be different than traditional educational settings, then in turn students will respond with more respect to administration not only with this topic, but also with other expectations and
