Sedaris uses many devices, particularly anti-climax and hyperbole to hook the reader to his storyline while also conveying his cardinal message. His carefully chosen literary devices effectively teach us about persistence and challenging our comfort zones through his traumatic and often humorous horror stories of being yelled at, and verbally abused by the “wild animal.”

As the stock market was growing interest at that time, they decided to invest some money in the market so as to pay their house. Luckily, they won the money for their house in the market. However, they were so greedy that they continued investing in the market. The market crash came and they lost all their money. Because Tay Soon could not accept it, he went mad. Finally, the madness drove him to death and his mother decided to build a paper house which he had dreamt before. In ‘Paper’, Catherine Lim uses irony to admonish people not to be greedy; otherwise, a person may lose his life and family.

London teaches us the harsh effects that nature can have on someone who is unprepared. We see that simple mistakes, like not traveling with a partner, or not bringing enough food, can bring down the whole trip. It shows us that pride can be the ultimate downfall of a man. Pride leads to overconfidence in oneself, which can lead to illogical decisions, which can lead to disaster. As was the case with the man in London’s story, his pride overtook him and led him to make choices that were senseless. We must learn from his actions and don’t think too highly of ourselves, but instead make informed and logical decisions. This includes asking the opinions of others and taking their advice, especially those far wiser and experienced than us. We must heed the warning that London gives us, and strive to live with
Comparing apples to oranges is not always futile. This statement is clearly proven to be true when comparing David Sedaris 's essay, "Me Talk Pretty One Day," and Dave Barry 's, "Lost In the Kitchen." Both of these essays are humorous examinations of human experiences. While Barry 's, an essay about men 's innate disadvantages in the kitchen (compared to women), relies on unjustified stereotypes, obviously false assertions, lame hyperbole, and overwrought imagery to convey his purpose, Sedaris utilizes a plethora of varying rhetorical devices and strategies to convey his purpose throughout his essay about taking a french class in France under the tutelage of a tyrannical and cruel teacher. Public living “bring[s] together people who do not know each other in an intimate, private social fashion and in most cases do not care to know each other in that fashion” (Jacobs 55). Now that families typically center themselves around suburban lifestyles, residents should understand that the same connections that Jacobs says were to be made in cities need to now be made in subdivisions. Jacobs was scared that with houses being spread out in the suburbs, little interaction between neighbors would take place. In order to avoid this, neighborhoods need to promote a sidewalk lifestyle that they currently do not (Jacobs 70). Where I live is one of the greatest neighborhoods in the city to live in; however, it does have its drawbacks.
