Just like in the short story “The Pedestrian,” I feel the path we are headed with technology and television may not be a good one. In the story people spend all their time staying inside and watching tv, they don't even go outside to go for walk, and if the do go outside the police thinks they are doing bad things. I do not think technology and television will have this bad of an effect on us, but I believe it will change drastically in the next 20 years. In today's society I feel we are heading towards a bad road with watching too much television. Some studies show that kids watch too much TV which may have bad effects on their health when they get older. With all the new types of TV’s like, 3D, HD,etc. many kids will consume too
It may be hard to admit, but television has become an intricate part of our everyday lives. People children often find themselves sitting in front of the television screen for a longer period of time than before and this has evolved immensely over the past few years. In this article, “The Trouble with Television,” by the author Marie Winn, mentions that addiction of television is negative effects on children and families. It keeps the families from doing other things and it’s a hidden competitor for all other activities. Television takes place of play and on top of that kids who watch a lot of television grow uncivilized. Also, the author mentioned that televisions are less resourceful for children and have negative effects on children’s school achievement and on physical fitness. Although there are so many other types of addictions but the author Marie Winn’s points of argument of watching television is a serious addiction that our children and families have negative effects.

As Mr. Mead, the protagonist, is taking his daily walk he notices the little things in life. This story is set in the future so it is foreshadowing what might happen to people’s lives. The diction that is used helps the reader understand the tone of the story.
There is no doubt that the technological advances in recent years have changed the way we live. We are now able to talk to people in any part of the world within six seconds, we can watch events from any country such as the Olympic Games live on television screens in our own living room’s, we can even have interactive video conversations through as small a device as a mobile phone. These advances have benefited millions of people worldwide but we have reached a stage where it is now time to stop and think of what is happening to us as a result of all this automation and modernisation; we are becoming over-dependent on electronic devices to carry out simple tasks, we are becoming less and less aware of people and activities in our own communities, even family activities are gradually becoming a thing of the past.

Most people hope to receive new advancements from technology to do more activities for them. This is not in the best interest for mankind. In Ray Bradbury’s three short stories The Veldt, The Pedestrian, and August 2026, Bradbury describes three different worlds, where he shows the possible outcome of the world if technology advances too far. Each story leads to negative effects on humans and the worlds that they live in. Technology does not have all of the solutions to present day solutions.
Based on the commonalities of the dystopian societies that we have read about, I would want to live in our current society, and not a dystopian one. In order to help make sure that our society does not change and become a dystopian one, I want to be a responsible citizen as well. In the short story, The Pedestrian, the people inside the society are unaware of anything outside, because they are too busy watching TV. Nobody knows what they are doing, and they’ve even turned gray.

The problem with the excessive viewing of TV is that it is decreasing the amount of thinking done by people ; children especially. This scares me seeing as children are easy targets ; vulnerable , impressionable, and naive, they are the ideal targets. Watching mindless shows like Power Rangers and Beavis and Butthead, children are becoming more and more unlikely to really think.

Like anything else in life, moderation is the key. Technology has so many advantages when used properly, but when not used correctly can definitely turn against us. Furthermore, everything we do is a result of the media such as watching TV, reading the newspaper, surfing the internet just to mention a few. The media feeds us information and fundamentally tells us what is precise. It is the only one aspect which affects what we do in society, although it is an impressive aspect. Modern technologies can very well be a double-edged sword, from safety to connectedness. Once again, they do have their advantages, but as with many revolutionary inventions, they can radically change our lives, for better or worse.
