Over the years many psychologists have studied the effects divorce has on children and in these studies psychologist have draw different conclusions based off their findings. They’re many factors that can result to divorce; divorce has no single cause. Divorce can be the result from low marital commitment, infidelity, low level of socioeconomic status, getting married at a young age etc. Although a divorce can eventually prove to be a positive solution to a destructive family situation, for most family members the period following the separation is very stressful (Clarke-Stewart, 2014). There are also many prominent risk factors that alter the affects of divorce like age, gender, socioeconomic status, the degree to which the child was drawn into marital conflict and the relationship between the child and the parent. All of these factors can change the effects that divorce has on child overall because every child is different and one can be more resilient than the other. Although it has been mention in studies that most children do adjust to their new life in 2-3 years, others are left with long-term challenges. Children may transition well through the second stage of divorce but restabilization stage can bring many signs of attention. Sometimes children repress in a subconscious matter because they tend to forget in a matter of years and later their effects may emerge at some point in there adulthood. Long-term effects can affect family relationships, intimate relationships and overall social development. In a 5-year follow up study, researchers found that children show a persistence of anger towards the parent who initiated the divorce, dominant feelings of sorrow about their parent’s divorce and intensity of longing to absent and resentment over their effects. Children will face short-term effect but more importantly they will face long-term challenges that will affect them in psychological levels. Family income is likely to decline after a divorce, and parents with limited resources generally experience greater stress and have less energy to devote to their children and the children are more likely to have mental health difficulties (Weaver and Schofield, 2014). Is as if parents unconsciously set the stage for their children’s to have poor relationships.
