For the YouTube analysis paper, a clip from a show called Shipping Wars that aired on the channel A&E will be discussed. Shipping Wars consists of independent contractors who make their living on bidding, moving and hauling oddly-shaped and oversized loads for customers via a website called U-Ship.
U-Ship is a huge site that has access to over 800,000 contractors that can provide instant quotes for whatever shipping desires one may have. Customers can go online and post the items they need moved. When they post their items, they post details such as; where the item is, where it needs to go, what the item is, and most importantly the deadline that the contractor would have to meet. The middle man in logistics is often called a freight broker, freight brokers are notoriously known to independent drivers as being greedy by taking a larger proportion from the drivers potential income, as well as being knowledgeable about the actual load details like deliver time frames and even as silly as it may seem, the location. U-Ship is highly beneficial to most that use it due to the fact that, often those involved are just the driver and the actual client. Issues such as; full disclosure of the actual details, incorrect dimensions provided by the customer, a change in the deadline, discrepancy with the agreed upon pricing. Contractors advertise their companies by using their equipment such as, trucks and trailers that they use to make deliveries. By making these deliveries those who just so happen to be in the area can see, so a general audience is their primary function. The contractors can team up together to deliver a load and meet a time line like the instance displayed in the clip with this particular episode. Their cost of production can often be split in instances where a load is split by carriers so; building a personal network with those who they hold a common ground with can prove beneficial. As you can see in the clip, not every experience is a pleasant one for the customer or the contractor. Many contractors have years of experience in this field while, some contractors do not, this can prove costly when mistakes are made and those mistakes can carry over to whoever they contractor had decided to team up with. For many of the contractors listed on U-Ship, their reviews are what will drive future clients to book their services.
