“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction short story about a boy that just lost his parents in a car accident and he has to go live with one of his family members. In the beginning, Michael has to live with his Aunt Esther because his parents just died. Soon, after he has lived with his Aunt Esther for a while he starts not liking her because she is always on the phone and not paying any attention to him. When she is on the phone she talks about him. In the end, Michael comes home from school one day and she is in his room not on the phone looking at his hermit crab. They get more hermit crabs because she thought that Michael’s hermit crab needed friends. Throughout the story, Michael has a difficult time because of his parents death. …show more content…

For example, in paragraph 12, the author says “Michael has been living with his aunt for 6 months now and they haven’t found a relationship with each other yet.” He doesn’t want to live with her either. Also in the beginning, his aunt Esther didn’t want to take him in. This proves it's difficult because if you don’t get along with someone not even 1 minute that you don’t want to be with them. Another way it was difficult for Michael is because he has to go live with his aunt that he doesn’t like. For example, in paragraph 16, the author says, “Michael still expects to see his parents.” In paragraph 16, the character thinks he smells his mom's perfume and his dad's cologne. Michael doesn’t want to live with his aunt because she doesn’t pay any attention to him, she's always on the phone and when she is, she's always talking about him. This shows he doesn’t want to live with her and and it also shows it’s hard to go live with someone that u don’t want to live
