Weather in a novel or film can set the tone for the whole experience. In the film The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne is a prisoner in the Shawshank state penitentiary serving life sentences for murder. During the film he helps people out in any way he possibly can. By the end of the film he escapes from prison through the sewage system and finds himself outside the walls of the prison in the middle of a storm. He rips off his uniform and stands in the rain. The rain symbolizes his escape and new life ahead of him as long as he is free. The rain cleanses Andy of his experiences in jail and helps him regain the strength to push through and live a free life.
During the mid-1900`s, mental illnesses were rarely discussed in mainstream media due to negative stigma surrounding mental illnesses. As a result, characters in film rarely had mental disorders because of the directors` worries of audiences` reactions to how the illnesses were portrayed. Director, Edward Dmytryk, however, attempted to diminish the stigma through his film Raintree County (1957) with Susanna Drake Shawnessy`s mental instability. Elizabeth Taylor`s portrayal of Susanna, however, heightened the stigma surrounding mental illness as Susanna constantly acted immature and childlike.

Weather affects the lives of everyone. When the weather turns foul, it makes life more difficult. Stormy weather in Tony’s dreams represents the conflict in his life, and the lives of those around him. One example of the weather in his dreams is the wind. In one of Tony’s dreams the wind is used to represent conflict that disrupts the peace that is a still lake. "There was a howling wind as the moon rose and it’s powers pulled at the still waters of the lake."(Anaya 120) The wind here is used to represent forces of disturbance caused by nuclear testing taking place south of the town, just as wind kicks up dust and blurs the view. Another element of storms is thunder and lightning. In Tony’s dream he sees, ".....a flash of lightning struck and out of the thunder a dark figure stepped forth. It was Ultima......I sought more answers, but she was gone, evaporated into a loud noise."(Anaya 71) Lightning can offer glimpses of illumination, but then darkness returns, and the noise of the thunder that follows deafens the ears. This represents the moments of good that can occur within the midst of conflict. Ultima’s appearance gives Tony a glimpse of where he needs to search for innocence, but he is still confused from this encounter. He continues to search for answers. Another significant weather occurrence is the appearance of mist. " The mist swirled around me. I was at the river, and I heard someone calling my name. I peered into the dark mist but I could see no one." (Anaya 61) Just as the mist leaves a person feeling isolated, the mist represents the war and how it left Tony separated from his brothers. Weather, in the form of wind, thunder and lightning, and mist, provides powerful symbolism for the conflicts in Tony’s life.
Review of A Hard Rain Fell: a G. I. ’s True Story of The War in Vietnam
In the chapter the “Rainy River” of the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, O’Brien conveys a deep moral conflict between fleeing the war to go to Canada versus staying and fighting in a war that he does not support. O’Brien is an educated man, a full time law student at Harvard and a liberal person who sees war as a pointless activity for dimwitted, war hungry men. His status makes him naive to the fact that he will be drafted into the war and thus when he receives his draft notice, he is shocked. Furthermore, his anti-war sentiments are thoroughly projected, and he unravels into a moral dilemma between finding freedom in Canada or standing his ground and fighting. An image of a rainy river marking the border between Minnesota and Canada is representative of this chapter because it reflects O’Brien’s moral division between finding freedom in Canada or standing his ground and fighting in the Vietnam war.
In the film Rushmore by Wes Anderson, the character’s dispositions are extremely juxtaposed. Sometimes the characters seem to be engulfed by a feeling of emptiness, loneliness and depression. Other times the characters are extremely motivated and determined. Wes Anderson helps generate this emotional atmosphere by using distinctive weather too help set the tone. He uses weather as a metaphor for the characters emotional state. Wes Anderson utilizes weather to show the inner conflict and turmoil inside of the characters that they often never fully express through words. It may appear to just be random at first but upon closer inspection it is clear to see it is done purposefully.
Love has the power to do anything. Love can heal and love can hurt. Love is something that is indescribable and difficult to understand. Love is a feeling that cannot be accurately expressed by a word. In the poem “The Rain” by Robert Creeley, the experience of love is painted and explored through a metaphor. The speaker in the poem compares love to rain and he explains how he wants love to be like rain. Love is a beautiful concept and through the abstract comparison to rain a person is assisted in developing a concrete understanding of what love is. True beauty is illuminated by true love and vice versa. In other words, the beauty of love and all that it entails is something true.
Even the Rain (also known as También la lluvia) is a 2010 Spanish film about a director Sebastian and executive producer Costa who travel to Cochabamba, Bolivia to shoot a movie about the exploration and exploitation of Christopher Columbus in the New World. Sebastian and Costa find themselves in a moral crisis when their key native actor, Daniel, persistently leads the escalating Cochabamba Water War. As the shoot progresses in and around the city of Cochabamba, a real battle is brewing. The government has privatized the entire water supply and sold it to a British and American multinational. The price of water jumps by 300 percent, leading to remonstrations and riots in the streets of Cochabamba. The protest is calm at first, but things become aggressive when the government fights back, and Daniel's participation almost disturbs the shooting schedule. As Sebastian and Costa struggle with their film, the violence in the community increases daily, until the entire city erupts into the infamous Cochabamba Water War. This film takes on significant questions of everyday life, as well as moral and human responsibility.
In the short story, “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver, the narrator describes a couple that is constantly arguing. The narrator never tells the reader the reason for the couples separation, but it’s obvious that they are mad at each other for some reason. Raymond Carver uses bad weather as a setting that foreshadows the story's conflict. Since everybody can relate to the weather and the way it behaves it’s definitely is a powerful mood and tone setter. I argue that the weather is key to interpreting this particular story because it sets the tone and foreshadows the story’s conflict . The imagery in the first line indicates that the story could turn nasty, “Early that day weather turned and snow was melting into dirty water”( Carver 324). By doing so, Raymond Carver is putting a very graphic representation that everything that comes in contact with this water is going to get dirty. The snow acts as a symbol since snow is usually white and white represents purity. The white snow represents the purity the couple once had, and the dirty water demonstrates how the couple’s relationship in slowly dying. As well as this day, that the reader can now sense has been a very long day with no true goal met whatsoever. Every
The role of relationship you have with other people often has direct influence on the individual choices and belief in the life. In the short story “on the rainy river”, the author Tim O’Brien inform us about his experiences and how his interacted with a single person had effected his life so could understand himself. It is hard for anyone to be dependent on just his believes and own personal experience, when there are so many people with different belief to influence you choices and have the right choices for you self. Occasionally taking experience and knowledge of other people to help you understand and build from them your own identity and choices in life.
On the other hand, poor weather in the novel was used to foreshadow negative events or moods. In the opening of the novel, when Jane was living in Gateshead, she was reading while an unpleasant visit of John Reed was foreshadowed: “After it offered a pale blank of mist and cloud: hear, a scene of wet lawn and storm-beat shrub” (2).
When a viewer watches a film, they are mostly focused to characters on screen and the plot which tells the story. In most films, the drama unfolding on screen is derived from a combination of these two traits. Setting is sometimes viewed and analyzed when viewing a film as well, but it is very likely that weather on screen is something most viewers easily overlook. This is unfortunate as weather, or in this case, rain, is an important part to the film in its entirety. The inclusion of rain, which incorporates thunder, lighting, and water, in both Rear Window and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, plays an important role to the films not only to the scene in which they are featured in, but to the entire picture as a whole. The dramatic effect of rain creates realism for the characters and setting, as well as acting as a type of pathetic fallacy, mirroring the feelings or emotions of specific characters. The rain compliments the actors on screen on a sensual level, incorporating visuals and sounds.
Singing in the Rain was one of my favorite movies we have watched, and probably the easiest to understand for me. The movie starts off following Don and Lina, big Hollywood actors. While they are walking down the red carpet to their new movie premier you meet Cosmo, Don's best friend. Don and Lina are fake lovers in the eyes of Hollywood movies, silent movies. And with it being silent no one has ever heard Lina's awful voice, and they plan to keep it that way. But after the red carpet he jumps into Kathy's car, with her not even realizing who he is.
