Twelfth Night Analysis

The latest production at the Playhouse Theatre QPAC was Shakespear’s Twelfth Night, Performed by the Queensland Theatre. This intricate play manages to discuss and demonstrate the effective use of dramatic elements such as relationships, dramatic/comic tension, dramatic focus, and contrast. Over the years Shakespeare's play’s had been redone with many different interpretations. Sam Strong interpretation aided by Tims Finns elaborate multiple layered musical scores of Twelfth Night was said to be“400-plus-year-old comedy that can still deliver the LOLs.”- Time Out London.

Malvolio's sudden change in the rules sets the scene up for the major comedic tension that brings forth yellow stockings and cross-garter belt. Along with speed and athleticism being used to a superb degree to create sensual poses both on the stage, and draped atop the piano lending to the hilarity and farce of this ridiculous situation. Olivia marries Sebastian Viola’s brother, Viola marries Duke Orsino, the maid Maria marries Olivia’s cousin. The plot also eludes to the pairing of Homosexual relations amongst other cast members is about to come to fruition. Except for poor Malvolio who was trapped in a supposed dungeon but in truth is the Duke Orsino’s Bathtub which again adds to the overall comedic plot. During the last scene emotional and psychological difficulties that the characters had experienced throughout the play, were forgotten in the end. This left the play to end on a happy note, however Twelfth Night’s transparency showed that all the characters during the play had their own agendas for their feelings, whether it be beauty, power, or social advancement.
