Over the years, video games have gain a bigger place in society. Mass media (television, movies, newspaper, etc) play an important role shaping society, mostly with younger generations. Before video games reached popularity, television was the biggest source of influence in mass media.Video games are now considered part of mass media, therefore the way characters are made (physical appearance) affect the body perceptions that the youth has (Kondrat, 2015). The problem with video games (and mass media in general) is that it gives the youth a wrong idea of what is expected from them. When a little girl sees a female character with big breasts, they think that they need one as well to be accepted in society. Having sexualized female characters gives young girls a wrong idea, and puts pressure on them to meet these beauty standards (big breasts and buttocks, flat stomach, clear skin, etc). As said in Kondrat’s paper: “heavy television female viewers were affected by the provided female image so much that they felt forced to meet it and by doing so they were ready to reduce their larger breasts or in case of the smaller breast to have augmentation surgery” (2015). If television can have this effect on its viewers, this could lead to think that video games could have the same effect. Its obvious that video games do not have the same influence on the population as television or cinema does, but the video game industry is gaining more popularity and more influence as time goes. So it is fair to say that video games in some way have an influence on the population. It is possible that one day, the video game industry will be as big and as influential as the television
