So my topic for today is about sexuality. Before I start my speech, I am going to give you imagery about my issue so you can guess what my main theme is about. So, (I will raise a ballpen/a certain object) this is an object. These things exist to do something for me. While me, Jem, is the subject. Subjects act while objects are acted upon. You might be thinking, what is the relation of these to my speech. Well, my topic is about objectification or sexual objectification. I made this because I think that it is a huge hindrance to a truly equal society. Sexual objectification involves the act of disregarding the personal and intellectual abilities and capabilities of a person; and reducing a person’s worth or role in society to that of an instrument for pleasure. If you are going to watch sitcoms on TV or see certain ads in the media, you are going to realize that this kind of behavior is being normalized. We are exposed to this imagery which makes the people see women as sexualized body parts while see men as people. Don’t get me wrong, objectification is often confused with thinking that a woman’s hot. Objectification is not the same as being sexually attracted to someone. I mean, it’s natural to see people as beautiful and hot. What’s not natural is the manufactured portrayal of women as sex objects for male pleasure. Objectification is women’s magazines being overwhelmed with all of the things that men don’t like. Objectification is being catcalled and harassed just for walking down the street. It’s commercial after commercial using women’s bodies to sell everything from A to Z with close-ups on her butt, her lips, her breasts to sell beer, cologne, jeans, jewelry, everything.
