Sexual Health Education Personal Statement

Upon graduation, I see myself working in the area of sexual health education. More specifically I prefer a job on college campus focusing on pregnancy prevention, HIV/STD prevention, reproductive health and sexual health. During my undergraduate years at North Carolina Central University I volunteered as a peer educator for STD/HIV disease prevention program for the campus and the Durham community. At that time my mentors at the university had a substantial background and sexual health education working in college setting. This was very interesting subject for me so I decided to follow their educational background which lead me to my future goals of becoming a sexual health educator.

I am concern that my educational background does not come close to the skills and knowledge needed to become a sexual health educator. Being a peer educator on campus only gave me knowledge and skills on HIV and STDs but not on pregnancy prevention and reproductive and sexual health. The training I received from Whetstone Consultations only increased my knowledge on HIV but not STDs and dealing with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The only other training I have that relates to decreasing the spread of sexual transmitted diseases is my certification in phlebotomy. I do believe that open graduation from East Carolina University I will have gain knowledge on ethics and ethic behaviors, learning the different styles of research methods and learning theory and applying to my job
