Sexual Harassment in the Workplace

Harassment has plagued the world for centuries. Sexual harassment and work environment viciousness are not only of historical roots, but contemporary issues are still present in the workforce today. Managers of organizations are tending to and combating modern sexual harassment and working environment viciousness, however instances still occur (Robbins, Decenzo & Coulter, 2011).

The U.S. Equal Opportunity Employment Commission (EEOC) defines workplace sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual advances or conduct of a sexual nature which unreasonably interferes with the performance of a person's job or creates an intimidating, hostile, or offensive work environment. Workplace consist of different levels of staff members, different ways of approach may be needed for this environment. Other than that, the organization must play an important role by providing support and discuss this aspect as a component of the work routine. By doing this, a respectful and a harmony workplace environment can be created. Thus, a congenial working atmosphere is build. When a working women does not take action against sexual harassment, not only does it negatively affect her as an individual, but it additionally gives others, who visually perceive the abuse, the conception that it is acceptable to be treated like a sex object and humiliated. Ignoring this negative deportment toward women encourage them to accept physical abuse, and may encourage adolescent boys to become ravishers or wife beaters.
