Understanding Sexual Assault: A Personal Perspective

Knowing a person or a situation from a story someone else told does not portray a clear insight into what actually is happening. In order to understand someone it is important to go directly to the source and strive to seek out a personal relationship. This past year has been incredibly eye opening for me personally on a topic most find to be uncomfortable. Through my senior year in high school I have gained a new perspective on what sexual assault truly is and how it can affect a persons physical and mental health. These victims go through so much it is no wonder they contract into a shell after the incident. “Y’all. I’m afraid of what will happen if I want to go out one night,” one girl on the team said. This girl just happened to be from my social action class and jumped into a part of the conversation. We ended up coming up with the idea of raising awareness through dance. There have been some girls on my drill team who experienced some level of sexual assault so it hit a nerve with the team. We all came together and spoke with our director about incorporating this topic into a dance while still being appropriate about the subject. Luckily the director thought it was a great idea. She had seen the side effects of sexual assault and thought it was a great idea to push the normal limits of a choreographed routine. The dance created such an impact on these women and the judges that have been affected that the dance received many awards as well as coming in first place for a stand out performance. The song it was choreographed to was Lady Gaga’s Til it Happens to you. Her story is so gracefully portrayed through out the song that almost everyone who listens to it has chills by the end. Listening to the musicality and lyrics it just hits you how common rape is. It has happened to so many men and women it makes me sick to think about.
