The reading "What is Gender Studies?" is an in depth description of what Gender s tudies is and the different aspects of life that it involves. "Gender Studies is a field of study that looks at the world from the perspective of gender" (What is Gender Studies 2). looking at the world this way reveals that the study of gender in the world encompasses nearly every aspect of life. Gender Studies look at the patterns and behaviors that are related to masculinity and femininity. The reading also discussed the difference between sex and gender. While sex is biological, gender is socio-cultural, meaning it is a social construct. These constructs create stereotypes enforced by the culture. The video we watched, "Sex, Lies, and Gender", was really interesting too. It explained the fluidity of gender, referencing intersex people. These are people that have both male and female genetalia at birth. They often perform surgery on infants that are intersex, believing that it can help with emotional problems for the family and the child as they grow up. However, there is growing evidence that this leads to problems later in life. The surgery can damage nerves and the child may feel betrayed and depressed if they find out they've been lied ot their whole life. It also spoke about societies that recognize other genders, such as the hijra in India. The documentary argues that there is nothing wrong with gender fluidity and that variation of gender is extremely common throughout nature. The documentary gave me a new perspective on the treatment of intersex infants. I had never really thought about how damaging it might be. I really enjoyed learning about how many other species have variations on the typical binary gender idea
