The House of the Seven Gables, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, tells the compelling story of the family of the Pyncheons, who own a house of seven gables. In the story, this house is currently owned by Hepzibah Pyncheon, a descent of the Pyncheons, left to take care of the house. Hepzibah is an elderly woman, who must deal with the curse that was left on the dreary house. Throughout the story, Hepzibah proves herself to be kind, concerned, and brave. In many ways, Hepzibah has proven herself to be kind. Towards each person she allows to stay in her household, she is kind and considerate. Even though Phoebe Pyncheon came to her with no letter of warning that she should be staying with Hepzibah, since the letter lost its way in the mail, Hepzibah still took her in and took care of her. Similarly, she also shows her kind disposition towards her unfortunate brother, Clifford. Before he arrived, she showed deep consideration for him by taking the trouble to cook a grand meal for him. Sadly, Clifford was greatly affected by his past experience in prison and is to the point where he is almost mentally insane. Even though Hepzibah is saddened by this, for he no longer acts the same way he used to before to her, she does not neglect her love for him. She does all she can to make him happy. She worries for the business of her shop from time to time; hoping that it will do well enough to keep her financially stable. She is also concerned with the way people talk behind her back, for she came from an aristocratic bloodline, yet she came to the point where she actually had to start up the old shop in order to support herself.
