The novel, Mrs. Dalloway, written by Virginia Woolf takes place in London, England during 1923 and it recounts the experiences and lives of the novel’s central characters over an entire day in mid-June. Although it has been five years since World War I, all of the characters are still impacted by it, in one way or another. One character, Septimus Smith, who fought in the war and lost his friend Officer Evans, is by far the most affected as he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is characterized as an anxiety problem that people experience after witnessing or being involved with a traumatic event, such as a war. The majority of the book is narrated through her eyes and the reader is able to see that she feels the oppression of society, like Septimus. She is suffering in a different way than Septimus. The war and the societal changes going on around her are clearly affecting her as well as the fact that she witnessed her sister being killed by a tree (69). She is a part of the upper class, yet she is not fully comfortable playing that role and is offended when Peter judges her. Clarissa feels an “alienation caused by a traumatic shattering of her identity” and represents how prewar England was so powerful and superior to other nations, but now has lost a lot of that luster. Like everyone else, she is impacted by WWI, but chooses to suppress her emotions and mask the destruction the war has left. Mrs. Dalloway struggles throughout the novel to find a sense of purpose and in her eyes, her parties are “an offering” (121). Her parties represent her attempt to find her function in society and contribute something of value as she is able to bring people together who have similar interests and views. They are a way for her to deny the reality of how life really is post WWI. When Sir William Bradshaw arrives at her party and tells her that Septimus Smith has committed suicide, initially she is mad that he would bring such bad news to her party. However, she then feels his “death was an attempt to communicate” (184). Clarissa feels his death is not a tragedy and that he is brave because he stayed true to himself and gave up on the failures of the society around
