Selena & La Bamba The film Selena, directed by Gregory Nava is a fantastic portrayal of Selena, American singer, songwriter, spokesperson, model, actress, and fashion designer. Selena is known as the queen of Tejano music and to this day she is one of the top selling Latin artists. She started out at the age of ten in her family band Selena y Los Dinos which gave her the confidence to be able to rise to stardom. Growing up Selena only spoke english but later on her father pushed her to learn to sing in spanish which made her music all the more beautiful. Tragically, Selena was murdered by her own friend and manager Yolanda Saldívar On March 31, 1995 over an argument about the theft of money. In the film they casted the lovely Jennifer …show more content…
The Director then switches scenes to the present with her father buying some old instruments for Selena and her sibling to play. Selena has talented vocals and her sister reluctantly played the drums while her brother played guitar. With this they formed Selena y Los Dinos and they played some small gigs at the family restaurant and also at a small fair. After seeing young Selena and her growth as a singer it switches to future with Selena as an adult in a huge dome stadium packed solid foreshadowing what is to come of Selena. In most of her concerts Selena sports a signature look of wearing pants and only a bra which her fans love although her dad does not support of it. Another thing he didn’t support was Selena’s romance with a guitarist he hired for the band. Her father does not approve of Selena’s choice in dating the guitarist, but they get married anyways. In the ending of the movie Selena's father ends up auditing some money being spent, and finds out that Selena’s manager and best friend may have been stealing from Selena. After being confronted by Selena and her father, the manager murders Selena over the money issue. The director did a great job of captivating the emotions of the tragic murder. Selena and her music made such a huge impact on everybody and her death really affected the world. She was so influential that the state of Texas even declared her birthday as “Selena Day”. Even thirty years later Selena remains known as the queen of tejano music and that is something that will never
My first knowledge of her came from the movie that was produced about her life. This movie included her childhood, her rise to fame, her relationships with her family and her husband, and her untimely death. She was a stunning flower that bloomed very young and kept growing with no sight on stopping. She had a gorgeous appearance. She had big brown eyes, ever changing hair styles, and a petite figure. Her husband was just as cute. A smaller guy but not too small. Selena and Chris fit together like two pieces of a puzzle. I developed a deep admiration for these two people and the things they experienced in their youth. I was always looking to learn more about their lives and what happened in Selena's tragic end that shook the world. After finding out that her widow wrote a book about her life, I was excited to get it and begin reading. I wondered if the movie had been completely valid. What did the movie leave out? How did Chris felt about her death? How does he feel now about all that transpired after Selena's death since this was not a perspective that the audience got to clearly see the movie? So, I went immediately, to buy the
Selena Quintanilla-Perez was an artist in the Tejano music industry that contributed to revolutionizing the style of music in the United States today. The Tejano music genre is originated from Texas but it may be called Tex-Mex because of its Mexican background. Selena absolutely loved her fans so she went to great lengths in order to keep her fans happy. (Angelfire 2) Her rise to stardom was also very successful thanks to the support and persistence from her father. She won a lot of awards and achieved amazing records in her musical career. The band that her family formed not only helped her find fame but it also helped her find love in a musician named Chris Perez.(Hispanic 2) Once she rose to stardom Selena was not corrupted by money. It appeared that her fame made her cherish her family a lot more and become less selfish by supporting charities. (Biography 1) The brink of her successful career was short lived due to a traumatic murder caused by the betrayal of Yolanda Saldivar. Selena was a Tejano artist that changed the style of music by uniting a clash of several cultures and therefore leaving a mark in history even after her death. (Texas 2)
Hollywood has not always been accepting of Latinas. Current stars Salma Hayek, Eva Mendes, and Penélope Cruz follow in the footsteps of pioneering Dolores Del Rio. Lauded as “The Princess of Mexico", Del Rio was a star whose allure captivated legendary figures Orson Wells, Marlon Brando, Elvis Presley, and Frida Kahlo. Fast friend Marlene Dietrich labeled Dolores, "The most beautiful woman in Hollywood. She has better legs than Dietrich and better cheekbones than Garbo". A beauty that lead to wild rumors of an orchid petal diet, or that Del Rio slept 16 hours a day to maintain her loveliness. Sadly, in a fundamental way, Del Rio’s talent became a prisoner of her splendor.
Her influence is simply not a question; it is a salutation to a musical icon that has embedded her legacy into musical history. When I think of the word artist, I think of someone who is innovative, original and someone who has style and a sound all their own. One artist that comes to mind is Janet Jackson. They simply don’t make artists like Janet anymore. Unfortunately, she was the last of her kind.
Known as the “Queen of Tejano” and the “Mexican Madonna”, Selena Quintanilla-Perez was the adored Latin singer who sadly did not get to live to see all of the success of her career. One of her most famous quotes is, “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever but to create something that will (PhilosIblog, 2014).” That is just what Selena did and she made sure that her legacy would live on for years. Selena surely left a her mark in this world with the help of her family, in her short lived 23 years. Selena was an amazing singer, she even made it very far in a genre of music that was dominated by men. Selena Quintanilla-Perez is an influential person because of her loving personality, her music career, her determination to succeed in a genre that was only men, and her success with her music that will never stop playing even if she is not here.
Esperanza, the most liberated of the sisters, devoted her life to make other people’s lives better. She became a reporter and later on died while covering the Gulf Crisis. She returned home, to her family as a spirit. At first, she spoke through La Llorona, a messenger who informed La Loca that her sister has died. All her family members saw her. She appeared to her mother as a little girl who had a nightmare and went near to her mother for comfort. Caridad had conversations with her about politics and La Loca talked to her by the river behind their home.
For me it all started out with Selena. I remember a boy in my middle school class dedicating me "Como La Flor" at one of our school dances in seventh grade. After that Tejano just sort of stuck in my head and all I ever thought of the song was that I had rejected that boy. Selena was quite a Tejana star at the time, and I was shocked with her murder two years later. She was a five star role model for Mexican-Americans to relate to and appreciate. Her songs live on in the Tejano world, as does her sprit and love for the music.
Jenni Rivera is well known for “La Diva De la Banda” meaning “Queen of the Band”. Her music is Banda and Norteña Music with a mix of Mariachi. Several media outlets such as, Billboard, CNN, and Fox News, just to name a few, have labeled her the most important female figure and top selling artist in the Mexican music genre. Jenni Rivera began recording music in 1992, her music is
Selena’s death sent “shockwaves” across the Latin community as well as the English-language. Tens of thousands went to her funeral to pay their respect to her and her family. After her death, Selena’s first English album, “Dreaming of You”, was released and became a huge hit. They made a movie of her biography in 1997, starring Jennifer Lopez as Selena and James Edward Olmos as her father. Thousands of people visit her grave, Mirador de la Flor, in Corpus Christi, near the Selena Museum dedicated to her life, fame, and career. Even today, she’s still considered “La Reina de Tejano” and her legacy still lives on.
Celia Cruz the Queen of Salsa well known all over the world for her outstanding performances and her message of joy to life. She was an artist with over six decades of success making her an inspiration to the Latin community as well as the rest of the world. CELIA CRUZ LIFE
There are three identities that all people have but depending on the culture, they chose one dimension to emphasize and downplay the other two. In the Mexican-American culture, they tend to value the family identity the most. Martin and Nakayama (2013) define familial identity as, “The sense of self as always connected to family and others” (p. 172). This was shown in the film Selena many times. The family was the most important aspect of their lives and that is the way they wanted it. Every decision that was made revolved around the family and how it would affect it. A specific example that illustrates this from the movie is when Selena married her guitarist, Chris. Her father had told her s...

The climax of the story has a few layers of drama that really bring out the problems between the characters. We see Santiago and his half brother Cheche battle about the future of the factory; this affects Santiago's relationship with his wife who doesn't know about all the debt and risks he has taken. Then there's Conchita and her husband Paloma, who are experiencing marital issues which become heightened by the seductive lector Juan Julian. Both couples have personal conflicts with one another as well as external issues that affect their lives. The play had interesting parts to it such as infidelity and abuse of sexual nature. some very sensual parts; like infidelity and sexual abuse but were carried out by the cast with immense care and genuineness. Gomez does a really good job of bringing out emotional performances from the actors. This really took me on an emotional/visual roller coaster. The characters moved from happy to angry and from night to day with great ease. Scenes were so realistic and I found myself really engrossed in the story. Gomez interpreted the script really well and I think he related to the story. The story felt natural and cohesive, like it was his
The Oxford English dictionary defines a diva as "a distinguished female singer" (Oxford University Press, 2014). Both Maria Callas and Madonna fit this definition, despite doubts in their singing ability. They share a dramatic presence, both on and off stage, which distinguishes them from others.
