In the book, The Secret Life of Bees, Kidd presents a character who i feel is one of the most influential and wise characters in the piece. That character is August, she has so many amazing qualities that I very much admire. She is full of knowledge and life experiences that come in handy when giving advice. She is also caring to everybody that crosses her path. August had several life experience and wisdom gained from years of life experiences. She let two sketchy looking strangers into her home, gave them a clean bed, fed them, gave them new clothes, and even gave them a job. Rosaleen had a huge gash on her If that were me I don't if i would be okay with letting two random strangers into my home. The way she dealt with Lily's situation was also pretty admiral. August knew Lily was lying about the aunt living in Virginia, but she let Lily come to her at her own pace and get comfortable with the family and the home. In her novel, she derives many of her characters from the types of bees that exist in a hive. Lily and Zach have characteristics that are akin to that of field bees, August has that nurturing personality of a nurse bee, and the Lady of Chains is revered by her subjects just like a Queen bee is by her hive. Nowadays, no one ever faces a problem that someone, or something, has already faced. No one really has a secret life to themselves.
August Boatwright is a reliable friend, a caring woman, and a positive influence to Lily. “August lives up to her name as the ‘Mistress of Bees’ and the ‘portrayal into [Lily’s] mother’s life’ in the first moments she welcomes Lily and Rosaleen into her home and offers them refuge in the honey house.” (Herbert, 20). August becomes a mother to Lily by giving her a place to stay and someone to lean on. August recognizes that Lily is missing something from her life, but she waits for Lily to confess the truth to her. “There is a hole in Lily’s heart from not having parental love, especially mother love, but August teaches her that if one’s earthly mother is not dependable, there is always a heavenly mother.” (Themes, 237). August creates her own religion for her self and her friends based around a statue of black Mary that has been in the Boatwright’s’ family for years. The group of African American women call themselves The Daughters of Mary. This group of women also plays a role in Lily’s search for comfort in a mother figure. “August becomes not only a mother, but a sort of spiritual teacher for Lily. Her views and attitude are similar to how I would act if I were in her shoes. I can't say I would be as patient as she is, but for the most part, I related to her. I looked forward to see what she would do next. I haven't anything negative to say about this book, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is open to read a fun book. When Lily is on bee patrol with August, she is told, “Every bee has its role to play… There’s the queen and her attendants… Bathe her… She’s the mother of every bee in the hive, and they all depend on her to keep it going,” (148-149). Similarly to the previous passage, Sue Monk Kidd uses the hive and its bees to symbolically represent both gender roles and community structure. Just like the hive, the Boatwright household is run, or ruled, by solely women. This is a strong example of gender roles in the story, because households and businesses were typically run by men only. However, both the household and business of the Boatwright sisters is run by women, and only women. In the case of the Boatwright household though, instead of inhabiting a “hive” where a queen bee rules, they inhabit a “hive” where everything revolves around The Black Mary. They bathe her in honey and worship her, just like the queen bee is worshipped and taken care of by those in her hive. Not only this, but similarly to a beehive, both the Boatwright household and the beehive would both die out if the queen disappeared and the work force suddenly stopped. The Boatwright sisters all have their jobs just like the bees, and without competing these jobs, the community would fall apart. Another theme present in the film is the importance of female community. Throughout the movie, the audience continually sees women together—for healing, for strength, and to learn to forgive and love. Each of the women is fierce and strong in their own way. After spending nine years with her abusive, and emotionally absent father, she decides to run away. So, she breaks her beloved nanny out of prison, and Lily escapes to Tiburon South Carolina, a town she links to her mother through the writing on one of her old possessions. While in Tiburon, Lily finds the calendar sisters three very different, very helpful sisters. The family agrees to take Lilly in, despite the fact that almost every white person in town frowns upon the very idea of this white girl staying in an African American household. While staying with the sisters, August, May, and June, Lily learns lots of things, ranging from bee keeping, to why and how her mother first left her. She falls in love, explores her past, and finds it within herself to forgive her mother for leaving her, and herself, for shooting her mom. This book is rich in both emotion, and culture.
According to pages 31 and 32, Lily said, “I watched their wings shining like bits of chrome in the dark and felt longing build in my chest. The way those bees flew, not even looking for a flower, just flying for the feel of the wind, split my heart down its seam.” She was the bee, flying to feel the wind, but full of emptiness because she couldn’t find her flower; her mother. As the epigraph for chapter 14 states, “A queenless colony is a pitiful and melancholy community; there may be a mournful wail or lament from within… Without intervention, the colony will die. But introduce a new queen and the most extravagant changes take place” (277) The initial changes with the introduction the new queen seem insignificant, but they are anything but. It begins with Lily taking over May’s old room. It is extremely symbolic of her fulfilling the role left empty in the house. Then, August stood up to T. Ray for Lily to ensure that she would stay in the house with her, effectively keeping her safe, and under her watchful eye, just as she had with May. Many other changes, large and small occur as Lily transfers to her new role, but each is significant to the bee symbolism.
She is worshipped by the Daughters of Mary (August, June, May and neighbors/friends). August is seen as the leader and resemblance of the Black Mary because she shares all of the same qualities. I believe if Lily would look to see what’s in front of her then she will see that her future will be clear. August is the answer and the woman who will mold Lily into the woman she needs to become.
When May dies, the personified bees rely on their religious and beekeeping connections to overcome their tough times. “August showed us how to drape a square over each box, securing it with a brick and making sure we left the bees’ entrance open” (Kidd 205). This ritual comes from a religious belief about bees having a connection with death; this is another form of guidance from the Black Mary. The grieving family turned to Mary after May’s death, and even Lily found herself in the room housing the statue more often than usual. The Black Mary is starting to become Lily’s guiding force; she even calls it “mother.” Lily asks for Mary’s help in order to be happy again. This help, of which the others are in need as well, allows the community to thrive, even with the loss of one member. August was correct when she said that Lily must be her own mother. Lily will not always have someone to care for her. If this happens she must learn to care for herself. Lily was also relying too much on the statue of Mary. When the statue of Mary was chained up Lily could not go to her for help.
The first example of Lily’s coming of age is in her spiritual development. She is introduced to the Daughters of Mary, who connect her to the Black Madonna. When Lily first sees the Black Madonna, she thought that:
The bees symbolize Lily’s unspoken guides throughout the novel. Kidd’s constant reference to the bees indicate that Lily eventually understands the importance of female power in the bee community, which she connects to her own life. When Lily initially sees the bees in her room, Rosaleen warns her that they can sting her if she tries to catch them, but Lily ignores her and continues to trap them, thus asserting her determination. Later, the bees reveal the message to Lily that she should leave her father. Kidd notes that one bee landed on Lily’s state map that she kept tacked on the wall, foreshadowing Lily and Rosaleen’s journey to Tiburon (10).
