The cultural landscape in America is shifting and our educational system must change with it. Our approach to educating students who speak other languages has been inconsistent and our results mirror that fact. The education of Spanish speaking students has been a topic of debate for quite some time depending on the political climate of the era. The four main options used in schools in the United States are English immersion, English as a Second Language (ESL), Transition programs, and Bilingualism (cite). English immersion and ESL programs seek to immerse the students in English as much as possible with varying degrees of support. This can equate to a loss of instruction in grade level content which often equates to significant delays as the students move up into middle and high school (cite). Both Immersion and ESL emphasize a rapid transition to English. Transition programs are more gentle as they initially use the native language and then gradually acclimate the student to English (cite). At some point students in Immersion, ESL, and Transition programs become proficient enough to perform in mainstream classes. This can be costly for students who fail to progress, though. Since language learning is an individual process, outcomes vary from person to person. Spending extended time in these programs may limit other educational opportunities and can cause poor academic performance overall (Bigler, 2014). Some students languish in these programs partly due to speaking Spanish at home (Zehr, 2002). With TWI, educators have the opportunity to ...... while capitalizing on cultural and language diversity. With the TWI model, half of the school day is taught in Spanish and the other half is in English. This allows students form both languages to become bilingual. It is well known that students who are bilingual have higher intellectual abilities, and are more marketable after graduation (cite). According to Neuroscience researchers, the bilingual brain works more efficiently than the monolingual brain (citation correct?CNN, 2014 find cite in MY lit review). First, bilinguals have greater use of skills in regions of the brain controlling executive functioning (Ramirez, 2016). They are able to use their bilingual brain pathways to switch between tasks quickly or to complete multiple tasks simultaneously. They also have metalinguistic skills so they are able to think about language abstractly and concretely. These skills build further cognitive strength over monolinguals. In addition, having the ability to process two languages in the brain makes it easier for individuals to learn a third language. Finally, speaking more than one language enhances overall brain function in a way that protects against age-related cognitive decline (Ramirez, 2016 - cite from my lit review or peer review journal!). A good early literacy program works for both L1 students and ESL students who enter school at the kindergarten age. Students at that age are very susceptible to learning new languages quickly. The ESL children had difficulties in kindergarten, but by second grade they had caught up and were right on track with the L1 students and some of them even surpassed the L1 students.
The technique relies on a holistic approach that adopts instructions that allow students to actively participate in the learning process. This is easier for children that feel that the society appreciates their diversity through bilingualism and biliteracy. The society and parents need to encourage children to take up bilingual classes because they offer a lot of benefit to the society through favoring critical thinking, rationality, and sensitivity to other cultures, empathy, and detached or balanced awareness. However, Sonia Nieto mirrors a society that is made to fake being American and become ashamed of their family. It helps appreciate that it is not by choice that anyone speaks any other language as the first language and that the society and community influence the language of choice. Poverty has many implications for educational achievement, for example, parents' educational attainment mirrors income levels, and parents' educational achievement is highly linked to that of their children. Despite the high number of ELL students, it is difficult to know, because of lack of data, to see what type of educational programs they participate in. According to Prospects, a 1995 national survey, reading and math were taught in programs using bilingual education in less than half of first and third grade classrooms serving limited English proficient students. Offered more frequently were programs where instruction was offered only in English, or where instructional aides, not teachers, were the vehicles for native language instruction.
The debate now is whether there is sufficient studies proving the effectiveness of Bilingual education and the need to continue it in many states. The United States is filled with many different ethnicities, cultures, customs, languages, etc. Supposedly, our public schools are equipped with classes, teachers, curriculums and materials in order to educate that part of the student population whose first language is something other than the English language. Bilingual classes, transitional classes, ESL classes are just a few of the programs that have been developed to instruct non-English speaking students in order for them to acquire the English language.
The issue of bilingual education is a much debated topic in this country and especially in this state. The Spanish-speaking populace has grown tremendously in these past decades, much of which has immigrated with Spanish as their only language. This has left the public school system with an interesting problem; how to successfully transition Spanish speaking students into an English environment. Public school systems have generally adopted one of two approaches to this problem. One is to allow students several years to develop their English with lessons taught in both languages. The other is a total immersion program where students are thrust into English-only lessons with little time develop their second language. Both approaches have ardent followers with valid arguments for each approach.
Learning multiple languages opens doors for people not only in their local communities, but on a global scale. It has also been proven to advance cognition by improving conflict management, executive controls, and sound recognition. Dual language is a form of education in which students are taught to read and write in two languages. The majority of dual language programs in the United States teach in English and Spanish, although there are emerging programs that teach in Mandarin, Japanese and Hindi. The programs start of mostly in kindergarten sand 1st grade and continue throughout primary education, in addition some dual language programs depending on the grade continue through middle and high school. Even Hayward’s own Burbank elementary and Winton middle school are offering dual language programs. Each level of teaching uses a different language ratio in which class is instructed the classes start off with a 90:10 ration and later as years pass the ration becomes a steady 50:50 (Lindholm-Leary, Kathryn J,2001). The goals of dual language immersion programs are to get children to become both bi-literate and bilingual, in other words, they will be able to speak and write fluently in two different languages. Dual language programs are becoming more and more common most of them are in public school but there are some beginning to become present private and charter schools. Dual language education should be introduced in all elementary schools beginning in the Kindergarten to boost achievement for English language learners, benefits it will bring to the community, outstanding brain benefits and lastly cost efficiency in education across the United States.
Overtime, the ELL population of students has been overlooked and have not been given the amount of help they have needed to be able to become successful in the United States. Literacy is not the only thing ELLs have to deal with, but also assimilating to the American culture and just trying to survive economically. Imagine being brought up in a family speaking only one language for your entire life and then you had to move to a foreign land where the language is different. If you had a choice of progressively learning this new language over the course of six to nine years or being put into a classroom and have to virtually teach yourself the language by listening to others around you which would you choose? Late exit bilingual education is a more effective form of bilingual education compared to the English immersion form of bilingual education in the fact that there are more benefits and less adverse effects. There are many reasons why late exit bilingual education should be the choice of public schools everywhere with high minority populations. One of the effects of late exit bilingual education is that the students would be able to maintain their cultural background instead of having to give up one or the other. Language is a big part of a person’s culture. Late exit bilingual education gives the non-English speaking students more time to master the English language which is not an easy language to learn in three years as the English immersion strategy teaches. The findings of the Ramirez team in 1991 evaluating the effectiveness of English immersion, early exit bilingual education, and late exit bilingual education further prove why late exit bilingual education is the one that needs to be used.
There have been many claims, but it seems that there are six principal areas where the bilingual brain benefits. Those are learning in general, complex thinking, creativity, mental flexibility, and interpersonal communication skills. And lets not forget the effect of delaying dementia and keeping the brain functioning effectively longer. The authors note that “although it is difficult to prove the existence of a direct causal link, it is likely that multilingualism produces a special advantage in utilizing a person 's brain capacity as creatively as possible” (Academy of Finland, p.1).
