I think in all fairness the secession was a big mistake for the South. The southern states economy was based on an agricultural system which relied on slave labor. They felt that the election of Lincoln threatened the power structure in the South. In the beginning Lincoln did not believe in abolition, his thought was that the individual states should regulate slavery. In the North industrial progress dominated the region and in time would make its way to the South which would threaten slavery. If the South seceded there would be conflict, where the fugitive slave act can be put to the test. The Kansas-Nebraska Act made the Northern states angry because slavery would migrate to the western territories. The South believed that
South Carolina seceded from the Union on December of 1860, General Robert Anderson and his troops were stationed out at Fort Moultrie. They did not think Fort Moultrie was safe enough so then he had a plan to move his troops to Fort Sumter. The Commander of the Union was Robert Anderson, and the Confederate commander was P.G.T. Beauregard. Anderson had moved his troops from Fort Moultrie to Fort Sumter. Soon after coming to the fort Anderson realized he only had a couple week’s supply of food left. The South seceded unlawfully for many reasons. Firstly, the thirteen original colonies, Texas, and Mexico all gave up their indigenous, sovereign status to enter the Union, in hopes of receiving the guaranteed benefits that the U.S. Constitution offers: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. All other states that appealed to Congress for statehood, have no right to even think about the idea of sovereignty, as they never held the status and wanted to be a part of the glorious Union. Secondly, the Preamble of the U.S. Constitution, states that one of the goals for the new nation was “to form a more perfect Union.” The statement “more perfect Union” encapsulates the ceaselessness and perpetuity of the Union, and implies the inseparability of its states. Southern and Northern People had different ideas about the civil war. There were problems within their country and they wanted to fix them. They knew the country was created for the people and was run by the people. They wanted the nation to succeed, but one side wanted it to be free for all people no matter the race, while the southern wanted to keep slaves. With these complete opposites ideas of thinking the southern states decided their only option was to separate from the Union. They split and this left the country confused. Confused about what was in store for the nation they had grown to love. It was no longer clear what they future held for American and it would take a couple of years to get the country moving down the path that leads to the world we live in today.

In the years paving the way to the Civil War, both north and south were disagreeable with one another, creating the three “triggering” reasons for the war: the fanaticism on the slavery issue, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the separation of the Democratic Party. North being against the bondage of individuals and the South being for it, there was no real way to evade the clash. For the south slavery was a form of obtaining a living, without subjugation the economy might drop majorly if not disappear. In the North there were significant ethical issues with the issue of subjugation. Amazing measures to keep and dispose of subjugation were taken and there was never a genuine adjusted center for bargain. Despite the fact that there were a lot of seemingly insignificant issues, the fundamental thing that divided these two states was bondage and the flexibilities for it or against. With these significant extremes, for example, John Brown and Uncle Tom's Cabin, the south felt disdain towards the danger the Northerners were holding against their alleged flexibilities. The more hatred the South advanced, the more combative they were to anything the Northerners did. Northerners were irritated and it parted Democrats over the issue of bondage and made another Republican gathering, which included: Whigs, Free Soilers, Know Nothings and previous Democrats and brought about a split of segments and abbreviated the street to common war. Southerners loathed the insubordination of the north and started to address how they could stay with the Union.
There were those that wanted to stay apart of the Union which were Unionists, those that wanted to secede, but with other states were Cooperationists, and those that wanted to secede immediately were Secessionists. Secessionists or Fire Eaters, thought that the only way to solve the conflicting views of the South and North was to secede or break away immediately without any other states' help. Secessionists were ready to secede as early as 1852, eight years before the election of Abraham Lincoln. Due to the division of South Carolinians the state did nothing until 1861. Eventually slavery did die out and the southern states were once again apart of the union, but not without a civil war. Ultimately the North and South’s differences could not be resolved through anything other than a Civil War. These causes, as well as others, left the South no other viable option, in their eyes, than to secede from the union, leading to the Civil War. Political, societal, and philosophical conflicts combined with one another to form the ultimate disagreement over slavery between the two regions. All in all, admitting a disproportionate amount of free states to slave states into the union, preventing slavery from expanding, and President Lincoln’s election were significant factors that lead to the secession of the southern states in 1860 and 1861.

For that reason, my perspective on the events that took place during the war is honestly irrelevant. Several compromises between the North and South regarding slavery had been passed such as the Nebraska-Kansas and the Missouri act; but this did little to relieve the strain.
