At some point in our lives we hear a story that has taught us a vital lesson, and we tend to remember the story very vividly. Growing up I would hear the same stories from my parents repetitively. As a child I would ask why? My parents were simply trying to teach me a lesson. One vivid story comes to mind quicker than any other and that story is about safety. Every young kid hears their parents tell them to wear a helmet when riding a bike, or to put their seatbelts on every time they are riding in a car. This time happen to be a time when my mother told me a story about why it is important to wear a seat belt. When my mother finally gave up on me, she began to share a story that I will never forget. One Sunday afternoon, my mother was with her family, coming home from church. In the small town of Davis, in which not much commotion ever occured, my mother heard the wail of sirens and could see a fast streak of flashing lights. First responders, firefighters, police officers, and paramedics were all arriving at the car accident. My mother was approaching the scene. My mother’s dad told his kids to not look at the accident and to keep their eyes closed. My curious mother did not listen, for she immediately popped her head up to look at the accident. From looking at the scene my mother knew the accident was brutal. The first thing she saw was a head. A head without a body. Like a ball slowly rolling, the head was still tumbling down the road. Me being very young I imagined the head rolling down the road like a soccer ball, for that was the ball I was most familiar with. My mother knew the victim was female from the hair on the head. The accident had caused the victim to be ejected from the vehicle and somehow decapitated. The body had been ejected from the car because the girl was not wearing a seat belt. I would always give up and just put it on, but on this particular day my mother was fed up. She was repetitively telling me to buckle up, in which I replied with a why every time. Frustrated and exhausted from arguing with me, my mother started to explain to me why it was important to wear my seat belt. She started to share her story of a time she witnessed a gruesome car accident as the entire cab of the car grew quiet. As a young kid, my imagination was very detailed and to this day I still picture the accident, although I never actually witnessed it. The thought of the accident saddened me. With a lump in my throat and a turning stomach I remained quiet the whole car ride. My mother just wanted me to understand the importance of my seatbelt, but she also taught me a life lesson.
