It first came to theaters Aug 13, 2010. Directed by Edgar Wright, the man behind other comedies such as Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) is a high school graduate who is jobless and lives in Toronto, Canada. Scott is 22 years old and is dating a highschooler named Knives Chau (Ellen Wong). Everything is all and well until Scott lays his eyes on the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). When you watch this movie you will experience a live action comic book. A movie critic by the name of Amy Nicholson said “A 112-minute entertainment contraption -- celluloid that shapeshifts its frames into video games, comic books and sitcoms”(Nicholson 1). These three things are put into the movie perfectly from health meters to fight being put on the screen like you are playing street fighter. Putting in words for sound effects like “thonk” or “bam” just as you would see in comic books. The effects are put in just perfectly, not to much and not to less. A movie critic by the name of Owen Gleiberman said “The first rock & roll kung fu videogame youth love story”(Gleiberman 1). Scott Pilgrim vs the World is a movie that is like no other. It brings a whole new kind of comedy. There is no other movie I would be able to compare. The movie in my eyes is one of the best movies I have seen. It has awesome fight scenes, great humor, and a interesting love affair. I could watch this movie over and over again. It's a movie that I would show as many people as I could about it. I chose to view and analyze the film The Boondock Saints. There were many different things I focused on while viewing the film. I decided to brake them down into the following categories: narrative, theatrical elements, cinematography, sound, and the overall experience. I will begin with stating my personal interpretations and understandings of the narrative.

The movie Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is based in the 1970s. It depicts the highly male dominated broadcast team and shows the shake up when a woman is hired as a reporter and has aspirations of becoming an anchor the television station. The particular scene shows Ron Burgundy is flustered because Veronica Coringstone is impeding on his masculinity. Burgundy exemplifies hegemonic masculinity by explaining he is a man and a professional, when Coringstone says he his acting like a baby he takes offense and explains he is a man and he his ultimately better than a women because indeed he is a man. Burgundy states, “'I’m a man who discovered the wheel, and built the Eiffel Tower out of metal and brawn. That's what kind of man I am. You're just a woman with a small brain. With a brain a 1/3 the size of us...It's science (Robertson, McKay, 2004). The clip also depicts Burgundy’s desire for Coringstone to be the typical submissive female he is used to. The articles will identify the gender stereotypes and access if they are true or false based on the research.
Since September 11, 2001, the Western world’s view of the Middle East, specifically countries like Iraq or Afghanistan, has shifted drastically. Whenever the media portrays the Middle East, they manage to spin a story negatively or violently. Due to these extrinsic influences, the youngest generation of Americans has never known an America that did not express at least some hatred toward certain parts of the Eastern world. Novels like The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini strive to encourage a healthy interest in Afghanistan and the Middle East while breaking the stereotypes that westerners have come to accept as fact about the culture and religion of Afghanistan. Hosseini manages to conjure a universal story line with relatable characters that introduce the world to the everyday people of postcolonial Afghanistan. On a grander scale, in The Kite Runner Khaled Hosseini utilizes his own life experiences alongside his firsthand account of the contemporary history of Afghanistan to craft a novel that breaks down these negative stereotypes and offers a significant contribution to Afghan American literature.
"The Great Gatsby" and "The Kite Runner" are two stories from different periods of time, parts of the world , and social situations . At first glance , these two novels are completely different but with a closer look, one would find more similarities then what holds the eye. Both "The Kite Runner" and "The Great Gatsby" depicts bias and unfaithful behaviours such as racism, adultery and the idea of social class superiority which is still in our current society. Tom Bunchan from "The Great Gatsby", Baba and Assef from "The Kite Runner" are examples of how bias and unfaithful behaviors are still socially accepted.
In the movie Silver Linings Playbook there are two main characters, Pat and Tiffany, whom portray a type of mental illness. Below, I will explain each character in regards to their symptoms and portrayal of mental illness and compare the information discussed in the Abnormal Psychology Textbook.
The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.
For this assignment we were asked to review a movie. I choose to analyze the movie Fried Green Tomatoes from 1991. This movie has many lessons hidden inside, but also has a story of a story. It starts off with a woman named Evelyn Couch going to visit her husband’s bitter aunt, and turns into the daily visits to another member of that house. This woman’s name is Ninny Threadgood, and she always has wonderful stories to tell Evelyn. At first, she seems unsure of this elderly woman’s presence, but opens up quickly. These two ladies have a connection, and Evelynn’s prospective of life soon changes. Ninny tells her stories all along, but in the end it reveals that Ninny was really talking about her life in the past. Evelyn was going through a rough patch in her life, and visiting this woman was all she needed to make some changes. Film Analysis - The Notebook Introduction The film is portrayed in the past and present scenario setting. It is based on a young couple’s love and passion for one another, but are unexpectedly separated due to the disapproval of the teen girl parents and the social differences in their life. At the start of the movie, it displays a nursing home style setting with an elderly man named Duke (James Garner), reading to an elderly woman named Mrs. Hamilton (Gena Rowlands), whose memory is inevitably deteriorating. The story he reads to her is a love story about two teenagers named Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah (Ryan Gosling), that met in the 1940’s at a carnival in Seabrook Island, South Carolina.
When people read a book that they like they cant wait to see the movie that is based on the book. Many people criticize the movie or are not satisfied. While you watch this movie it is visually breathtaking and easily relatable. Chris McCandless is played by Emile Hirsch who does an outstanding job of portraying McCandless. McCandless’s parents are Walt and Billie McCandless. In the book they are portrayed as a little stuck up and snobbish. Sean Penn is a screenwriter and director for the movie adaptation of Into the Wild by John Krakauer. Sean Penn portrays Chris’s parents in a negative way in order to show that they were essentially responsible for him breaking away from society.
Love is a word that’s been both miss-used and over-used all at once. Romantic movies change our definition of and have a big impact on this definition greatly. There have been many movies and novels made over love, but never like this. “The Notebook” is a love story about unconditional love that two people have for each other. This emotionally, heart touching story will have your eyes blood-shot and burning from you not wanting to blink your eyes. This tremendously wonderful love story will have you not wanting to even miss a millisecond of this heart throbbing film. With many plot twists and many scenes that will have you falling off of your seat and you not having any nails by the end of the movie, this is the movie for you. In the modern day era, we find in society a ubiquitous usage of technology that seems to be never ending and forever growing. Included with this notion, the broad subject of surveillance is of course included. Contemporary surveillance, or more specifically technological surveillance, has been described as ambiguous; meaning that it is often misunderstood or open to different interpretations. The representation of surveillance within popular culture has played an impacting role on how we as a society perceive it and this raises certain questions that may reflect back on to society. The 1998 film Enemy Of The State directed by Tony Scott, Starring Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight is considered to be a ‘spy-thriller’ blockbuster. Its central themes explore a range of surveillance techniques and equipment and also provides some insights, no matter how realistic or unrealistic they may be, into the real life security organisation; The National Security Agency (NSA). Using this film as an example and analysing how these themes are represented will hopefully allow us to key these ideas back to modern surveillance theories and practices.
For all you action junkies, this film is not worth your money or time. Having not watched many action films, the scene after scene of chaos has put me off completely. The two hours which looked like they were from a low budget movie puts millions of dollars to waste.
