Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment Essay At the end of the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment period, society and government were drastically changed from the ideas and observations make by political thinkers and scientists. The time period of the Scientific Revolution was the 1500’s and 1600’s and took place in Europe. The Enlightenment time period was the 1600’s and 1700’s, and this is where people started to use reason and develop new ideas about the government. The impacts that the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment had on society were advances in medicine and chemistry, understanding space and gravity, improvements in government. Before this period of time, many relied on ancient greek thinkers for information about astronomy. People also relied on common sense and the teachings of the church instead of using observation and reason. One famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei, laid the foundation to future scientists with his discoveries. His invention of the telescope changed the world, with what he saw and figured out about space. His telescope could magnify up to eight times, which before could only magnify three times. Pointing his telescope to the sky, he saw the rings of saturn, craters on the moon, sunspots, and four moons surrounding jupiter. This was never seen before because of how poorly the other magnification tools were. His observations pointed to the idea that the planets moves around the sun. This idea challenged the church and angered everyone, because they contradicted ancient views about the world, even though his discoveries were right. Isaac Newton’s discoveries came to the conclusion that gravity held the universe together. Newton came up with a theory about how the planets moved as they did, and perfected his theory using calculus. Using calculus, he shouted that gravity keeps the planets in their orbit around the sun.
